The Government is just weeks away from rubber- stamping the long-awaited 4bn Royal Navy contract to build two aircraft carriers in a deal that will reshape Britain's shipbuilding industry, according to defence engineer VT Group.

After posting a 33pc increase in full-year pre-tax profits to 71.3m yesterday, VT chief executive Paul Lester said: "We have been told by the Government that the aircraft carrier programme is imminent. It is just a matter of weeks before we get the green light."

The carrier contract would be the foundation stone for a new "national military shipbuilding champion", Mr Lester added.
