Calling all IJN Tone (利根) & Chikuma (筑摩) fans

My earlier worckbench review of Yankee ModelWorks 1/350 IJN Tone is
missing, and since I forgot to post the updates for october I might as well
post them now just before I take vacation and can start modeling again.
Still not finished with a 3D-modeling projects for John Sheridan, but it
won't be long before I can continue with Tone and take her off the
workbench!

IJN experts I need your help, I�m fixing a couple of things on my Minekaze Tone and I�m kind of short on sources about this ship now I whish I had bought the Tone Gakken book when I had the chance . anyways, something came to my mind after seeing Anthony�s comment asking about Miyukikai plans I did some research and Bill Grunner from PFH has plenty of plans including Chikuma�s plans as she was in 1938. my question is, was Chikuma and Tone similar around 38 and 39?, I�m guessing YES although I could be big time wrong, any help will be appreciate it. TIA

I built the Minekaze Tone a few years back. From what I could discern, Tone was unchanged from the time she was built until 1943, when she went in for refit. Not sure if she and her sister were identical twins, but it appears that they may have been.

I ordered Kojinsha's book on the Tone. I will be able to tell you as soon as it arrives.

Thank you guys, Chuck I will appreciate it my friend. Martin it was thanks to your Minekaze Tone I bought mine, she was the last kit Bill from PFH had in stock. She really deserves a second refit for being a relic nowadays.

I wish some company sold blast bags in a 1/350 scale� modeling these suckers is a very tedious job if someone knows of a better product to model these I�m all ears. TIA

I constructed the blast bags on Yamato's 6" from scratch. I first cut the basic blast bag shape out of 1.5mm styrene sheet to give me better control over the final shape of the bags. The plastic bag shapes are in two pieces, one for the turkey neck sag underneath the barrel, one for the stretched portion above the barrel. I glued the barrels and bag shapes onto the turret, and then applied a thin layer of putty onto the bag shapes for sculpting the folds and creases of the canvas.

I hear other people have had good luck building blast bags up layer by layer using white Elmar glue.

That is some idea there Chuck i'm going to give it a try using one of the other turrets, i like that idea of shaping them up with the styrene. thanks i'll keep you posted.

Thanks Dan, half the credit goes to Chuck though thanks to him i was able to come out with something close to the real thing lets face it those turkey necks i had before were out of the question these blastbags were bothering me for sometime is a good thing to have them off my back now, let see what's the next challenge..

2 more shots on the turret i haven't been able to do much lately kind of short on cash now i did get to add some detail lines on top of the turret, Miyukikai's blueprint is pretty decent and very well done.

Jose, I keep coming back to look at this thread and fine your Tone very nice. Looking at it has made me get my OLD Fujimi kit out of the stash, oh my...... Do any of you IJN builders know if the one being offered by Squadron mail order "on sale" is a newer or better kit??
I consider myself an intermediate modeler and would like to have a good kit to start with in 1/700 injection mold.
Any word on one of these sisters in 1/350 injection plastic??

I know the Fujimi kit has been reissued with PE, but its the same kit. The hull is good, other bits not so much. The Aoshima versions, IMHO, the better kit.

No word on 1/350s as of yet.

The info on MSW suggests the 1/700 Fujimi Tone will be "all new tooling" as at Leyte in '44.

Hi folks. I am new on the forum, but I had some of my ships on Steel Navy, and as I did Minekaze Tone, I used tissue paper soak in a mixture of white glue and water. It works great, and IMHO is faster and easier than putty. best regards from France, Jean Barby.
