I printed and mounted two DESRON 1 decals on my USS Sides and attached the helo pad nets which are from GMM's Modern USN/JMSDF pe set.

Did I share this little guy with y'all, yet? Just for fun! USS Hercules PHM-2. I still have some railings and rigging to go, as well as a little more detail to the mast. I see a little diorama for it, too. I cut the hydrofoil supports uneven to portray it in a left turn.

Both your FFG and PHM are amazing.

I scratch built a Mk 38 25mm Bushmaster Chain Gun for my USS Sides. She had one on the stbd side in 1988. Location on the model was confirmed by a USS Sides vet.

I just noticed the top torpedo tube is crooked.





Here there is one located on the port side on another FFG.

Really nice Carl. You could try using the PE bushmasters from the pitroad ARLEIGH BURLE/KONGO set.

I have the DRAGON USS Mustin DDG kit and maybe I'll get the Pit-Road PE139 for it. But $24.00? Wow!

Well on second thought, $24.00 isn't that much more than other sets of PE, i.e. GMM or Tom's.

I think I'll stick with my scratch built one, for now.

As far as I remember the Pit-Road set is tiny, compared to what you get from GMM for the same price (See the Modern USN/JMSDF set, it's huge!). But of course you don't have the same parts, and especially Pit-Road's CIWS parts look nice.

"Strait of Hormuz - 1988" Diorama

I have started putting together and painting my diorama. The wake along the ships' waterlines aren't done yet. The Liquitex isn't dry yet and is still white.

I wanted to have the USS Sides mounted to the base when I attach the mast and rigging. It keeps the model from moving around while rigging it, I feel. I want the main mast in place before attaching the radar tower, SATCOM arrays, and chaff launchers.

I'm nervous about the Sides' mast. It is very delicate and the attachment / gluing points are small. I hope I don't accidentally detach the mast while rigging it. Wish me luck.

Inspiration? I don't know about that. I have been inspired by others' models and skills to improve my own.

When my 1/350 USS Duxbury Bay AVP-38 won First Place and Best Ship in the Regional IPMS OMACON 2008 contest, one member said, "Well, I guess you're the best ship modeler in the club, now. We'll all be coming to you for help."

This statement had a little sarcasm to it, for there were only about five ships in the 1/350 category and about eight in the 1/700 category. A bit of fluke in the judging, I'd say. Richard Sliwka had three models there and his work is several levels above mine. Richard won second and third places. My 1/700 AFV Club USS Knox won second place in that category.

More irony to the contest results is the fact that I just got back into modeling in November after a several year hiatus. And even back then, I never considered my models contest worthy. I just joined the local IPMS and this is my first contest.

I'm having fun and enjoy sharing, as I enjoy looking at all of the models that everyone else is sharing.

It's a FLUKE, I tell ya!

A couple of days ago, I was checking out your ships in the Gallery looking for the chain guns that you had mentioned, but I thought they were .50 cal.s. The PE ones look a little skinny, don't they?

Looks great Carl. I hope my USS REUBEN JAMES FFG-57 comes out as good as your SIDES. I am putting it in a diorama of the LINCOLN battle group which I was a part of in 2002. If I get the courage up I will post some pics.

Were you on the Rueben James or another ship in the group? What is/was your rate? I was a Monkey Mate on subs. Sometimes I wish that I had gone surface fleet. I would have seen more of the world, I think. But, I get really seasick, really fast. That's why I preferred subs, in the long run. Its a nice smooth ride, submerged.

How many ships in your diorama for the Lincoln group? We'll all be interested in some photos!

I just discovered after making my own DESRON 1 decals, that the DRAGON USS Mustin DDG decal sheet, that I have, has two of them on it. They're a little smaller than the ones that I made.
