She is looking good Rocco. Are you building her just from photos or plans?

Thanks Navarone, She's pretty much straight out of the box, except for the 62, they are letter transfers. The Kit is ARII 1/800 Saratoga, but a friend served on the Indy. i have to add some detail to the hull that sits between the bottom of the flight deck and on top of parts attached to the hull. i used tamiya , light ghost, grey, german grey (for the flight deck) and dull (red for the hull )
martial arts and music share the same principles, both wrestle with complex chords and rare melodies ....

It fits together really well, i was pretty surprised at the ease of putting the main (larger) parts together, the smaller parts seem to be pretty decent too... i havent done any work to the airwing yet, most of the jets need to have the tail wings put on (don't know if this is common among Carrier kits, cause its my first) I would recommend it, the shop i was at didnt have the other carriers in this class from ARII, but this kit looked good as soon as i opened it upHippy Ed wrote:

Well, I for one will be looking foreward to some pics
My ARii Forrsetal is coming along sloowly... I'm now starting to build the island as I check my references which I noticed the kit has the angled funnel instead of the rectangular one. Do I cut it down or, do I build it up?
It is also my understanding that I need to redo the port qtr sponson since it was rebuilt after the great fire of 1967.

I believe you can cut it down for a later Forrestal - the stack was made flat, then shortened.

Ok, I am doing this in the 1959-61 config. thanks jgjgrease wrote:I believe you can cut it down for a later Forrestal - the stack was made flat, then shortened.
any ideas on the port qtr sponson? I've read that it had been rebuilt after the fire of '67. and this kit is a post-SLEP which I am backdating.

Post '59 FID Changes
Well, according to Bert Kinzey the Forrestal changed little during her April '59 refit. The smoke stack was replaced with a rectangular one with a flat top. The aft mast was changed to one with a "T" shape and some of the smaller communication antennas were changed. An SPS-37 antenna was fitted to the forward lattice mast, and the aft lattice mast was replaced by a longer pole mast that could be lowered during flight ops. The guns and directors were not removed until the 1961 refit. If your kit is the "modernized" Forrestal, then you may need to consult older shots. PM me for more info - I may be able to help you.

Re: Post '59 FID Changes
Thanks John for the rundown. It looks like I'm gonna have to get a copy of that book! Seems I didn't know about the aft mast being changed to a "T" shape. I'd appreciate any help you can provide me with & PM is inbound.jgrease wrote:Well, according to Bert Kinzey the Forrestal changed little during her April '59 refit.
