Great build Carl. Apparently you build everything, including the railings, before you paint anything. Why do you do it that way? How do you check the seams? Do you not find it difficult to paint the deck?

Re: Postwar navy in 1/700.
Thanks, arnobiz!
Sometimes I put the railings on, sometimes I don't, before painting. I find that the railings hold better to the bare plastic. I like that strong bond. Sometimes when a piece of PE breaks off its because it was only glued to the paint under the rail. I use CA glue. I also like to air brush the railings in place rather than brush them by hand afterwards. Sometimes I will air brush the PE on the sprue before attaching them, as well.
Do you see anything specific on this model that I am overlooking? Something that my methods are contributing to or hindering? Feel free to let me know! Anytime! Anybody!
On this model, I didn't mount the main deck, fantail, missile deck and helo deck nets and railings until the hull and decks were painted and the model mostly complete. One reason being, I'm better at the small railing pieces like on the upper decks than the longer pieces of railing on the lower decks and so I procrastinate on these, and it is a preventive measure for knocking off the railings with my pinky finger while working on the rest of the model. The upper superstructure railings were mounted before painting.
I hand paint the decks with a brush and thinned acrylic rather than mask and spray. The railings can act as a border for the brush. Sometimes a little touch up on the railings and bulkheads are needed afterwards, but not much. Acrylics are better for this than enamels, I find. There are always little knooks and krannies where a paint brush won't fit if the railing is in place and I will leave these off until that area's deck is painted.
I am paying more attention to my seams. I'm assuming you mean the bulkhead to deck seams. After filling and sanding the seams, I'll air brush the finish color over them. Fill and sand some more if needed and then air brush them again. If I do this, I scrape off the paint with an Xacto knife along where the railings will be attached.

Very nice build, Carl. You make my Spru-Can look VERY crappy
Well, here is the Principe de Asturias. Its been a long build that started in Portugal, in the hands of Ayala Botto and finished in Spain in my hands. I hope you like it.

Hi Sparrow!;
Your Principe de Asturias is truly a jewel. I love that flight deck, the soft light grayish of the hull, very clean and elegant lines. Youve captured excellently the actual details of the real ship. Even the island are greatly executed. These SATCOMs are very good, and remember me the most recent version of her. Even the radar & funnels are masterfully represented.
Its one of your best kits!!!.
Hope to see a resin kit from her. I cant understand why no one company have release a kit from her
Of course, I cant scratch this ship like yours.
Un abrazo!.

Sparrow,
If you think your Spruance model is crappy, you have made up for it with this wonderful scratch build of the Principe de Asturias. I wouldn't have guessed that it was a scratch build. Scratch building an entire model is something I'd never try to attempt, myself. Maybe a canoe, but not a ship.
The water in your display is very realistic!

Re: Postwar navy in 1/700.
"BROACH!!!"
USS James Monroe SSBN-622 broaching off the coast of Iceland (or wherever you'd like it to be).
I had this idea at about 8:00 pm, last night. I had a 1/700 DRAGON USS Benjamin Franklin and USSR Sierra class kit from long, long ago.
Nekatrios, You and I had spoken about "cheating" with a Nuclear Navy diorama, remember? This would be a form of that "cheating".

There is a hint of an image of the black hull of the sub, just beneath the surface.

Hi Carl,
Showing a Sub in its natural habitat isn't cheating, otherwise you could class waterlining ships as cheating, or go the otherway and say full hull is cheating, its how you want to depict the dio,

Happy modeling
John

Re: Postwar navy in 1/700.
By "cheating" I meant not building the entire model.
Nektarios mentioned his idea of making a dio of CVN-65, Bainbridge, and Long Beach, the first nuclear USN surface combatants. I told him not to forget the Nautilus but wasn't sure if there was a 1/700 model of her. I suggested just sticking a periscope onto the water base and calling it the Nautilus.
I made this dio just as sort of a gimmick. Not intended to be serious or impressive, at all. It was fun.
I did four patrols on the USS James Monroe in the late 1980's.
Broaching on submarines was usually a derogatory event. It usually happened when a newly trained Planesman was trying to maintain periscope depth in choppy seas and broached the surface, instead. This was more seriuos on Boomers since we were usually trying to remain undetected, and a big splash can give one away.
I probably should have put some down angle on the fairwater planes for my dio.

I would probably do the periscopes or scratch the island, yeah i guess it wouldnt be a good idea popping up outta the water in the middle of a patrol, i loved watching the Subs do the Emergency surface demo's
