Carl, what is the size of the Tamiya Water Effect Plate? I want to make some dioramas and i d like to know if it is big enough for a carrier in 1/700.

I have the 1/700 Trumpeter USS Hornet kit (Doolittle Raiders) which comes with the water effect Plate. It's the same size as the box itself. (fits right inside the box)

The Ocean Effect Plate A by Tamiya is 16.5" x 11.75". Probably not big enough for an Essex or Nimitz class. It was barely large enough for my Iowa BB which is 15" long. It worked for my CVL and CVE nicely, of course.

I had to glue two pieces together on my Strait of Hormuz-1988 diorama but the seam was very obvious even after I filled the top of it with LIQUITEX gel. I painted both pieces, on their reverse sides, and then glued them together. There was dark paint on the glueing edges which is why I think the seam showed through so much. I hid the seam with waves and wakes on my diorama. I wonder if the pieces were glued together first and then painted, if the seam would be more invisible.

I have my eye on some water effect plastic from PLASTRUCT. I bought a small sheet (abt. 9"x7") at the hobby shop and it is called "Agitated Water" which looks more like calm harbor water for 1/700 scale. They have "Choppy" and "Stormy" water effect sheets, too, and they come in blue or clear color. I haven't seen these in person, but they might due for nice ocean waves in 1/700. These PLASTRUCT sheets come in larger sizes (as big as 14" x 24") than the TAMIYA stuff. I plan to order some of these someday.

Here s a photo of Jag s stealth carrier i started yesterday. That s what i received as a birthday gift form my girlfriend. The kit is unbelievably easy for a carrier. It will join my DDG-1000 and LCS-1 to form a stealthy battlegroup.

Jag Stealth carrier (CVN-78) WIP photos. Since the kit doesn t have any decals i used a combination of Starfighter decals, GMM and Ships and Co. decals. Building this kit made me understand why the U.S. Navy has rejected any radical change in the design of its future carriers. The basic design of the Forrestals and improved Forrestals was so succesful that it was virtually repeated with small changes in each following carrier. Small differences in flightdeck layout as well as armament exist but the basic concept remains the same.

Hey Nektrarios! I'm working on a Jag stealth carrier too. So I figured I up you one with a Jim Shirley arsenal for its escort! Still need to finish the airwing though.

Wow it looks great Bob J. I really like the Arsenal ship but never had the chance to get one. Could you post more photos of the Arsenal ship since it is something we dont get to see every day.

You ask you get. I found it with a JSP pre-jumbo Cimarron at a LHS in Philly. I bought every red box I could find. lol! The kit was only three parts, the hull, the gun, and the mast. Not much for reference so I built it plain and stealthy!

While I will admit, the ship looks very nice, I have to admit that I never really liked the concept of the Arsenal Ship, primarily that it lacks a lot of the electronics, such as the ability to autonomously direct and fire the missiles it carries, as well as a lack of defensive weapons of its own. It just seems like a great big expensive liability - sure, it's either inside the battlegroup or far behind the lines, but they could have done just a little bit more and improved the concept a little more - not to mention the potentially horrible effect of a missile detonation in one of those massive blocks of missiles.

Still, beautiful work both of you - the JAG carriers are impressive, makes me wish I could get one myself!

The whole concept of the Arsenal ship was just like that. A ship with few sensors , small crew and lots of VLS cells. Virtually missile farm. I guess that if it would have progressed into something more than a concept then we would have seen it better armed and with more sensors.
