Nektarios, what kind of planes will you use for your air wing? F35s? Ospreys?

I ll use F-18E/Fs plus a squadron of USMC F-35s (from the Pitroad set) and i ll use both Ospreys and SH-60s. I ll use F-35Cs to replace F-18s when they ll become available. The pitroad ones are good just for A and B versions.

I didn't realize that the flight deck came off and the hangar deck was detailed.

I often overlooked this kit on the JAG site catalog. I thought it to be rather hoaky. But you have really changed my mind on that, Nektarios!

Carl it is the only kit that has this feature. You have the option not to glue the flight deck and be able to remove it and see your work inside the hangar.I will add more aircraft and stuff inside the hangar later. I think i can further improve it. A while ago i asked Tom@ Jag if this could be done to the JFK kit (a future project from JAG). Unfortunately this can t be done to a conventionally looking carrier.

I think Jag came up with this future carrier because it was one of the proposed designs for CVN-78.
I think that this kit is a must have for all carrier builders because its something that looks different compared with other carriers and also because it is a what if you can let your imagination free and create your own airwing.

Anyway, an update on my other Carrier, HMS Illustrious in 2005 fit-I have finally fitted out the 'hole' where the Sea Dart missile was, cut out holes in the bow for Bollards, and painted the flight deck, and I am scratchbuilding Walkway exensions. Photoetch is next! Airwing to follow in a couple of days.

Looks nice so far ASFC. I don t know about the others but i ve been quiet because i m finishing 3x Kilauea s and i m preparing my next project(s). I ll tell you more about them later.

One of my favorite carriers is CV-67 JFK.

I always wanted to build her. The problem was that no kit exists for her in 1/700 or any scale. There was a plan for JFK to replace Kitty Hawk in Yokosuka. This gave me hope that a kit would be produced by Fujimi or another company once it would be homeported in Japan. But USN plans were changed due to the poor material condition of JFK. The ship was decommissioned ealier than it was expected so no JFK in Japan. Later Jag announced their intention on producing this kit in resin. Well i couldn t wait that long.

Then i started chatting with John Currie. He always dreamed of building her too. He had an island built ( he couldn t find it )
so he started all over again.
I always feared having to scratchbuild the island. the rest of the ship was a challenge but i thought i could do that.
Well Murphy's law worked for me this time. As soon as John finished the island he found the older one. When i shared my thoughts about building JFK's island he kindly offered to send me the older one.

About a couple of weeks ago i have decided to start building the ship in its latest cofiguration. So what i needed was:

1 kit of Italeri CVN-76 and
1 kit of Italeri CV-66 plus some other minor parts like a couple of RAM launchers, two Sea Sparrow launchers Plus several PE parts froM GMM.

This is very useful for your build but you only get it if you have good friends like John.

So let the JFK scratchbuilding begin

I took a break from my Modern USS Iowa and have my JAG Forrest Sherman ready for air brushing. The 3" gun mounts are not permanently attached, yet. I'll do that after I brush paint the decks. I left the 5" gun barrels off so that I don't break them off when finishing the rest of the model.

Great work as always Carl, I think those Forrest Shermans have to be among the most beautiful and well balanced ships ever designed. I'm planning one in 1/350-"someday"

That's a nice carrier ASFC. I was looking at some Invincible Class carriers the other day to complement my Type 42s that I recently bought but could only find full hull models. Did you modify the hull into a waterline model or is there one on the market that I missed?

It always amazes me just how good some models that were built from scratch are and that's quite a project Nektarios, hope you post some pictures along the way

NukeMM, I know it might be an amateur question but what would be the next step that you take with your model after having attached the railings? What I'm driving at is that I have only recently started working with PE parts and found it difficult enough masking off the deck after brushing it. I decided to attach the already brushed railings only after I had finished brushing the remaining hull (which of course did not result in clean work). I was just worried that masking off the decks with the railings already attached might even be more difficult. I'd really appreciate it if you (or anyone else actually) could give me a few tips so I can get a little better with things. Thanks!

Yes Orb, my Illustrious is the Dragon 2007 re-issue, which I waterlined with a stanley knife and gave it a plasticard bottom for added strength. There are true waterline models available, at www.skytrex.com, but they would need photoetch detailing to improve them.

I find that I can get a cleaner, stronger and more reliable glue joint when I CA glue the PE to the plastic or the resin, itself, rather than gluing them to the painted surface. Most often, I will air brush the PE still on the sprue.

You metioned brush painting. Do you brush paint everything?

I always air brush the entire model with the hull and bulkhead color then brush paint the decks. (In the really hard to reach areas, sometimes I use a tiny Q-Tip like brush that I found at HobbyTownUSA.) I don't mask anything, unless I'm painting in non-skid on the decks. With a magnifying lamp, a small brush and thinned acrylic paint, I use the base of the bulkheads and base of the railings as my guide as I creap up to the edges and keeping the brush almost flat with the deck. A brush with a square tip is best, I find. If I get any deck color on the railings or bulkheads, I touch up those spots with the hull/bulkhead color, with a brush. I do this similar to painting the walls in the house next to the ceiling and trimwork. Sometimes I'll leave off the PE railings wherever I don't think a brush will fit to reach the deck, and then glue on those railings, later and touch them up with a brush.


I scrape off the deck color wherever I have to glue something on to the deck. In this case, it will be the 3" guns, torpedo launchers, and gun directors. The other features of the deck are easy enough to paint around.
I have turned to painting the boot top of these waterline models with a paint pen, instead of masking it off.
