Thanks guys.

ASFC, those skytrex models look decent, however, they might be just a little over my budget :) I look forward to seeing more of your Illustrious.

Carl, thank you for that detailed post. I should have been more precise. With brushing I actually meant air brushing, sorry. It's interesting to know that you brush paint the decks. I was under the impression that most of those fabulous models that you find online are just about airbrushed entirely. That is why I airbrushed the deck areas first and then masked them off with Tamiya tape - which of course took ages (and still was not as accurate as I had hoped) Thank you again for the tips and I think with my next model I will try your approach and air brush the hull and bulkheads first.

Is JAG planning other versions of the Forrest Sherman class?

A few "in progress" photos..........

My previous models have been "clean". I am experimenting with washing the details on this model. I'm not done with wash step, yet, and have the entire port side to go.

You may notice too, many windows on the bridge. Well, I screwed up the resin window partitions while cleaning up the bridge part before installing it. I installed PE windows that weren't the right dimensions but look good enough, for me.

Yes Carl they ll do probably both ASW and AAW modernised versions but its not a priority for them. Other kits will come first like Belknp and Leahy class.

I wonder if they'll make a Forrest Sherman version like the USS Barry that had a different, and sharper, bow.

I'm anxious about the Leahy and Belknap cruiser models, too.

Should they release a LEAHY kit, I`ll purchase and build as USS WORDON (CG-18)

A small update on my 1/700 CG-62 Chancellorsville. Getting there (very) slowly
She still needs railings, weapons, completion of the masts/radar/antennas and hull decals. This build definitely convinced me to paint as many markings as possible. The helo deck markings are decals but the bow and stern markings as well as the hangar door stripes are entirely done by masking, as the red circles were much too wide for a realistic rendering IMHO. Also, I tried to render the subtle mosaic effect seen on this picture on the lower part of the front superstructure:

Here is the result:

Arnobiz,

Nice start to your CG! The painted warning circles and the mosaic effect are two items that I'm really not ready to attempt, myself. I admire your skill on this.

_________________________________________________________________________

Since my mix up with the location of the two different fire control gun directors and the wrong bridge option for the USS Forrest Sherman, I am now depicting the USS Du Pont DD-941 instead. The Du Pont had the sponsons on the port and starboard sides above the bridge and had the gun director radars in these positions, but she didn't have the 4x2 torpedo tubes like the Forrest Sherman in this same era. I'm curious if the 941 had the depth charge rack on the fantail, as well.

I'm almost ready to paint the boot top and clear gloss coat the whole thing in preparation for decals and then a nice over all dull clear coat. Then on to the masts and radar and rigging after mounting the hull to its water display base.

I still have a little wash effect details to complete and I'm worried that I have over done the washing of the details since I'm more used to "clean" models. Any honest comments are welcome, good or bad.

Thanks Carl. Masking is really not very difficult, it's all about cutting tape and being patient! With a good blade, a ruler and a cutting compass you can do about anything I think.
Here are some more pictures of my WIP:

CVN-71.The elevators that will be in "high" position and the jet deflectors are assembled at this stage so that they can be leveled with the deck and the joint is easier to hide at this stage than when everything is painted!
I almost erased the engraved markings as I really don't like how it looks afterwards. I just left a slight mark so that the decals will be easier to place  . I masked the rest of the deck with ordinary tape to protect the details (Especially the holes and the catapult rails).

CG-62: A better image of the "mosaic" effect, simply obtained by a succession of little rectangular masks and layers of all the greys I had

Arnobiz, nice looking model you got there. I'm just finishing up my own CG, however, not quite with as much detail work (those mosaic effects are amazing!)

Carl, looks great so far and I don't think the washing is over done at all.

Its going great round here, i'm loving the paintwork on the cruiser arnobiz. Carl the weathering isn't over the top-it doesn't notice, well no what i'm saying is that if it wasn't for the obvious 'fake' background it looks like the real ship!

Anyhow a quick update on my Illustrious-I have finally filled the hole at the bow :woo_hoo:. The slightly lighter grey area shows how much I had to do-be warned about this kit, Dragon in their wisdom built parts to plate over the Sea Dart area and then neglected to try these parts out to make sure they are the right size before releasing the kit :Tirade: . You will notice I have started to add photoetch parts.

Thanks Orb, good luck with your CG. Which kit do you use? Don't worry for the mosaic effect it is not displayed by all CGs and not even always for those who have it :cool_2:

Good job ASFC and thanks for the comments I'm glad you like it.
There seems to be a lot of adjustments to do on this kit indeed! Did you paint your markings free-hand with a brush or with masks? They look slightly irregular, maybe you should compress your masks more next time to make sure there is absolutely no gap between them and the area you want to protect (It took me three or four times to get it right the first time :Mad_5: )

Yep Arnobiz my markings are free hand-the 'wobble' is only slight and life is too short to correct every last one (I had never thought of masking them off :o!).

Well I must say that is some very impressive free hand painting!! In this case masking would have been easier/better but these free hand skills will certainly be most useful in other situations.

ASFC, looking good so far! (and I too couldn't paint free hand like that)

Arnobiz, I'm using the USS Monterey kit from Dragon. I thought it would be time to start using PE parts and that kit seemed to be a good place to start. Which kit are you using? And can I also ask what you are using to mask off the flight deck of your CVN?

I would like to know how you mask your Carrier decks as well-I have HMS Victorious, but no decals to complete the deck, And i really don't feel like having to paint them on freehand or butcher up some decals!

Thanks for your comments guys on Illustrious. Ref my freehand painting-it honestly doesn't look as untidy as some of the photos portray her, and my painting skills have come along way since I did Ark Royal V about two years ago, again painting all the deck freehand ( :heh: I should probably be sectioned wanting to do all that by hand).

I will certainly keep you posted on the deck painting of CVN-71. At the moment I am removing most of the engraved markings, I will hopefully start the actual masking/painting session this week end. There is a terrific masking job on an Interpid there: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=35634&st=0&sk=t&sd ... d&start=30

BTW the Trumpy CVN decals are uncomplete/not all exact (e.g. the dotted lines should be red/white, not clear/white), that's why I have to paint them...

Radar Question:

Is this an SPS-6 or SPS-12? I'm pretty sure that the radar on the top most platform is an SPS-10.

An SPS-12 on the lower platform would not clear the vertical stanchion on the aft end of this platform.

I'm leaning towards it being an SPS-6.
