I found out that it's a Neustrashimiy class frigate, not sure which one. Not a bad ship for the job. Let's hope they are successful.

Well, I don't know whether they have the capability to actually use the tanks. They would need alot of fuel and ammo, and seeing as trhe soviets have never really bothered with Africa I don't know how available soviet tank shells will be. I could of course be wrong, but I suspect that even if they do get them to a port, they won't be able to use them to any great effect.

But still, lets hope they don't. The Canadians do need help there, it's a big stretch of water to cover with one or two destroyersm the helping hand wil be welcome I expect.

Also, Peter the Great and Admiral Chasabenko (spelling?) were sent to the Carribean recently for exercises and visits to Venuzuela before a big summit or something in Cuba. This must be quite upsetting to Bush eh?

Is that so? There must be a good reason why they picked that one then. Yeh I'd imagine they'll take a pretty hard line. I would imagine it will more a case of "BANG BANG.........who goes there?"

Still, I can't fault the decision. That stretch of shipping lane is desperate for some decent policing. The fact that they give in to these stinking pirates is the reason it's so bad. It's a visious circle. Let's hope that the presence of some naval gunnery thats unafraid to blow criminals out of the water will make the job less attractive to these people.
Apparently they are going to be acting more as an escort than anything else. I wonder if we will see more of a convoy system emerge? That would be the most fool proof way to deal with the situtaion. No pirate is goiing to be stupid enough to attack a convoy with russian marines zipping around it.
The collapse of the Soviet Union and the mothballing of it's navy definately worsened piracy in Pacific waters, they seem pretty keen on flexing their muscles again.

I agree that it's a good thing that at least the Russians decided to take action.

With the increase of fleet activity in the past year or so it will also be interesting to see as to what their next ship movements/deployments will look like. I highly doubt that Bush will like the fact that he will have a Kirov class cruiser cruising through the Caribbean.

Not to mention the Chabanenko... which to anybody with enough brain cells, knows that is NOT what the news reports it, an Anti-submarine warfare craft. No Rastrub on that boat, that's for sure!

Yeh, I'm sure people would itch a bit more if they realised that thing was one of the most potent destroyer sized ASuW platforms in the world. Peter the Great has to be one of the firecest surface combatants in existence too.

I've read up on the incident some more, Apparently, the cargo was 33 T-72 MBTs and a "substantial quantity of ammunition." They were all meant for the Kenyan army. I fear that many of them may trundle toward Mogadishu.....

So why do you guys think they picked the Neustrashimiy for pirate stomping then?

Actually, Will, you're wrong... the Chabanenko is an anti-shipping platform, they replaced the SS-N-14 launchers from the Udaloy Class with the SS-N-22 missiles, which marks the shift. The Udaloy II, which Chabanenko is the only one, is in the fleet. Yeah, that's a fleet of note, I still wish I knew what the other two in the surface fleet are though.

I thought that "ASuW" stood for anti surface, and ASW was anti submarine. I know that they put sunburns on the II to make it anti shipping, just like the sovremmeny. Thats why I thought that the US government would dislike it even more .

The US will worry when these ships actually arrive on station, and demonstrate they can conduct successful operations without major engineering casualties or weapon malfs.

I suspect they sent Neustrashimy because she was the best operational ship to send; there's a reason she's had most of the port visits, etc over the past few years.

Sorry to say, but you're wrong.
Chabanenko is still listed as anti-submarine ship in the Russian Navy. The Sunburns were only a move to make her more multi-purpose. The Rastrub was removed, yet instead she received the Vodopad anti-submarine rockets. That capability arrived with the fixed torpedo tubes instead of the trainable launchers which the regular Udaloys have. She also has two more torpedo tubes to allow more Vodopads and torpedoes. This way she retains her excellent anti-submarine armament (along with of course her sonar suite). The Rastrubs were not needed anymore and the space became available for the Sunburns. She's probably the only real multi-purpose ship they have.

As for Neustrashimiy, she's probably indeed the best unit to send. A Sovremenny is overkill and consumes too much and the Neustrashimiy has a fixed hangar along with a good, not too heavy, cannon. Other units suited for this job would be the Coast Guard Krivak III's, but I guess it's not really a job for the Coast Guard out there.

When I first had mine I couldn't wait to open the box when I got home. What a let down
I ended up selling it off, there were just to many things I would have had to change.
In my opinion its a great toy for the kids to play with in the pool !!!

Just to tease you guys...I was aboard Admiral Levtchenko a couple of weeks ago when the Russian Task Force stopped at Lisbon for 3 days!!! My camera was burning of use!!!
