Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
I am getting started with Revell's USS Arizona 1:426 using GMM photo etch. My intent is to build her the way she appeared in 1941.
One of the things I have been unable to find is an accurate rigging diagram. Anyone know where I might find same. I intend to
use fly fishing line for rigging lines.
I have discovered a few new tricks already and am going to do a build report for my website, http://www.scale-modelers-handbook.com
It starts here: http://www.scale-modelers-handbook.com/ ... build.html

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
NARA is probably your best place to start, unfortunately. Do you have the Floating Drydock Plans?

-Tracy,
Thanks for the quick response. No I don't have drydock plans. A search of NARA hasn't revealed anything. I will probably just go with the rigging depicted on to revell cover. Got any tips for doing the rigging on a battleship?

My apologies... I meant The Floating Drydock company's TFW Series plans. There is some rigging shown there. There are some accuracy problems in terms of details but not in the rigging that I've been able to determine.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
I'm considering a build of Arizona using a 1/350 Banner kit the wife gave me years ago for Christmas. My skills are no where near as good as you guy's, but I believe I can do a respectible job.
My question: Has the color issue been solved for her Dec. 7 appearance ? I read thru the Arizona Color Threads and as you can guess I really didn't get a definitive answer.
TIA ....

Hey geedog, welcome to the boards. I have the same kit myself and have been searching the color question as well but, there is no definate answer as of yet. I think it is safe to say it can be done up in Grays or Blue without any problems.
I'm contemplating doin' her in the grays

I don't think we'll ever have the color question solved to everyone's satisfaction. 5-D is the safest, as we know she was in 5-D for sure for part of the year.

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Monitoring and responding with oil clean-up equipment if something major shows. There is no economical way they could recover the oil from the wreck now; it is spread throughout her wrecked hull and they'd have to demolish the wreck to recover it all. I support leaving her as is to decay out of respect and the fact that as a battleship, she has a lot of thick metal. Any decay will happen over time and there will not be oneGuest wrote:I have an a question about the Arizona wreck at pearl. What do the powers that be plan on doing about the oil still on board ? Thanks Hank45
Even if there was, Pearl Harbor has already had a catastrophic oil release once before, on December 7th, 1941. It came back from that, a time when there was little to no care for the environment. Pearl is also a built-up, fully functional industrial harbor now and there is little shoreline near Arizona that man kind hasn't occupied and displaced wildlife from. I would rather spend the money protecting areas that would have a greater impact, such as the recovery of oil from USS Mississinewa (AO-59).

To any person, what was the uniform of the day for naval and marine personal on 12-07-41 also where would the liberty boats discharge in coming and outgoing personnel? In board or outboard of the Ariz? Thanks for your answers, Hank45

Starboard side; Vestal was moored to port so the ladders would have been on the starboard side. If you look at photos of Arizona during the attack you can see some of the ship's boats moored at the starboard stern.

passing through the canal zone question
When was the last time the Arizona passed though the Canal Zone before Dec 7 1941?

Re: At 'Em Arizona Fans!
Regarding the question of what to do with the bunker oil still aboard the Arizona, I was aboard the Arizona Memorial in early November. From the information given out by NPS personnel, there are no immediate plans to attempt to pump off the remaining oil, in fact they are somewhat bewildered at the amount of oil that continues to leak and surface from Arizona (leading to the legend of the Tears of the Arizona). At one time a retainment boom was put around the site to prevent the oil from causing problems along the shore line and the harbor itself, but it was found that for some unexplained reason, the oil disapates before it actually came in contact with the boom itself! It has remained in its current condition for years with no problem. NPS personnel dive on the wreck on a regular basis to monitor its condition and I would be shocked to find out they did not have contingency plans to contain the oil should there be bunker collapse and mass oil escape. I guess the plans could be described as cautious monitoring.
Best,
Rick T
PS - By the way, if you have never visited Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial in particular, I highly recommend it. It answers so many questions and is very sobering. A reverent experience. In fact, the Navy and NPS personnel remind you that the Arizona is a graveyard and to speak in low, respectful tones. I have a second cousin still aboard the Arizona, and had heard about him all my life, so the visit was very poignant for me. RT

I too have an uncle still on board, my mother and father came back from a visit with the same reaction as you.
I have the Dragon 1/700 kit that I wanted to build going through the canal in happier times, so if anyone knows where I can find the answer as to when her last trip was I would greatly appreciate it.

According to the date chronology of Mr. Stlllwell's book Arizona on page 320 he states that Arizona entered the panama canal on 17 Aug. 1934 from the pacific to atlantic and then on page 321 she returned back through on 24-25 Octpber 1934 from atlantic to pacific. I hope this helps you, Hank45
