Nice photos, thanks for sharing. While at the NATS, Keith Bender and I visited the museum; it was the first time for me. I really enjoyed the working model engines, the prop, but wish the preservation tank had been more visible.

Slowly but surely Manhattan is nearing completion. Am getting back on Tennessee now as I finish some details & weather the monitor.

Now is this the monitor you were working on before and posted pics of or was that a different one?

Yes, its the same USS Manhattan, a Canonicus class monitor, that battled Tennessee in the Battle of Mobile Bay. Each monitor was painted in a distinctive color scheme & Manhattan was the only one with bandit mask or black stripe around its turret.

Chuck, that's interesting on the stripe. I knew that a lot of the monitors would have different colored glacias ring and rifle shield, giving a strip effect, but it doesn't look like Manhattan has a rifle shield. Cool.

She looks great. I've started collecting more info on the Canonicus class myself, to finish off the 1/200 scratchbuild and the 1/96th version I'm planning. I'm thinking of finally diving into Rhino 3D and designing her in a computer.

Here are the pages from Steve & Bill's book showing the paint scheme of the Canonicus class boats. As you can see neither Manhattan nor Tecumseh had bullet shields.

I'll get some better photos including a few close ups to show off Steve's plate skins & awning that he has tooled.

Yes, I downloaded Steve and Bill's book and have used it for reference. Steve and I have exchanged several emails about the Canonicus class. I'm still not totally convinced that Manhattan and Tecumseh didn't have bullet shields at Mobile Bay, but I can't find photographic evidence one way or the other. All I can find are photos of most of the other members of the class and they all did have shields with one or two possible exceptions. Consequently, I've also found that at least one Canonicus class ship had flush mounted bolts on her turret, so who knows how many others of the class had that as well.

I wish they'd just raise the Tecumseh already and answer some of my questions! But that's the one thing I love about Civil War ships, 99.9% of the time no one can prove things one way or the other, so build it the way you like! A nice change from WWII ships.
