He still comes in at 5ft 8in long and man is that big.
Where are you going to keep him once you've finished.

Hi Roy Yep storage is not my strong point. The shed is just long enough to allow a model up to 72inches. Once this build is completed I'll have to cross the storage problem head on or I'll have no room to start any new project. Things must be moving at a pace now , I've ordered the paint from WEM and will be picking this huge order up at Telford. Kiev will be resplendent in Northen Fleet colours. Only one draw back I'll have to air brush in doors { shed}

Both the main jib and purchase frame are fitted to the base. And thankfully
they both move freely .


Like the previous crane build the base supports the drive motors/inching gear,
and hoisting barrel . These are made up from various diameters of aluminium tube.

Each of the components are built up and prepared.

The end plate that goes over one of the drive motors . The bolt head effect
is the simple expedient of using PVA glue dispensed from the fine point of a pin.

Assembling the various componats that will go onto the top of the crane base.
At the bottom of the picture is the separate parts that will go to make up the
cable guide . More on this next time.

Airbrushing indoors

Dave, if you go to http://www.metcheck.com and type in your post code it'll give you
relevent data on humidity, this'll help you to pick the best day to spray with the
shed door open. I know some one who installed a bathroom type extractor to his
shed so he could airbrush all year round. Problem was they are not sparkless unlike
the type used in kitchens, result, boom he goes out the door thankfully no major
injuries.
What do you use to prime your build with.

I made a visit to the guys in Wagga and took some pictures of both the Admiral Kuznetsov next to the Kiev Class - Novorossiysk being build there in the same scale as mine 1/72. This is to show the people here the difference in size to these ships.





Also there are some pictures of there crane work also.

Hi Roy I use Hi-build primer but I take on board what you say and I certainly agree. I did build a small cabinet type spray booth with a sparkless motor fitted for the extractor but it's only good for fittings and the like. Thanks for the info .

Hi Mick It's really interesting the difference in size between Kiev class and Kutnetzov . Nice piece of work on the crane though . Detail of this is hard to ID with out on board shots. As a matter of interest what type of drive motors are you going to use on Kutnetzov?

Brian from Wagga has the details about the motors to use in this type of large model. He plans to give me the details soon. If I recall he said something about a 24V motor with some dirty BIG batteries in the model for ballast and power.
So far I still have no idea about how much I will need for ballast but I hope to find this out as soon as the foam comes out of the hull, Maybe in a month or two.

Just as a reminder the cable guide assembly is at the bottom of the photo

First the two ends that will support the roller are drilled out using a pin vice.

A length of brass wire is cut to size to insert through the tube and into
one of the ends.

The guide holder is formed from styrene with the two ends drilled out. .

The pillar for the guide is added to the guide holder . A wire pin will feed
through the two ends and into the roller.


The completed cable guide. �Where does it fit �

The Slewing rack is fitted to the base.

All the assemblies are temporarily fitted to the base including the roller cable guide.

comes to mind, "One picture says a thousand words" and here are the perfect examples.

Mick no doubt you have seen this superb image of the bow comparison between Kuznetzov and Gorshkov .

Here are a number of old images to show that Kiev rides quite well . Hopefully the next
time any on the water shots are shown it will be as completed .

The next part of this mini project is to fit the purchase frame back supports.
But first plating across the pivot end of the jib
The pins locking the main jib are removed.
.
The pivot end of the jib is covered by litho plate thus .

The pin and jib are re-set .

The back supports for the purchase frame are formed by first acquiring 3mm
aluminium tube and compressing the required length into a FLAT section.

At the upper end a U shape cut is made . This will seat up to and around the
sheave pin either side of the sheave . Taking a pin vice a hole is drilled in the
lower end that will eventually allow the support to be connected to the base.

Formed from styrene are one of 4 identical sections that will be fitted to the
rear of the base that will eventually provide a common link for the supports
and the purchase frame pulley.

Question for you: Are you intending to do all of the construction first and then paint the parts, or do you paint some parts after completion? Have you painted any parts?
