Off and on, I've been adding figures to my first Iowa model. Not really fun. I think I need to get some modern US aircraft carrier figures for it, too, and add a helocopter to it. These are Eduard's pre-painted US Navy figures.

Since my second Iowa model is so, much better than the first one, I'm thinking about donating this model to the Navy Recruiting Station in Council Bluffs, Iowa. I was the Recruiter in Charge (RINC) of that recruiting station back in the early '90s. They have a huge, vertical picture of the USS Iowa doing a broadside firing of her 16" guns. Really cool!

No, Karl, I'm thinking of using the forecastle and fantail 40mm positions for the RAM Launchers, nothing else. Keeping the CIWS on the broadside where they are, putting the RAM in the Forecastle and Fantail positions.

Yeah, the 16" gun on a PT Boat was a little humorous... even if you'd get like... one, fixed forward, and pretty much nothing else on it, with the recoil sending the boat backwards a good few yards.

Not a bad thought with your first Iowa concept, they might have an appreciation for it, with added symbolism coming from a former RinC.

You're coming along quite nicely on Sampson, very well indeed.

I'm almost done the Tigershark, well, the main fuselage. I've puttied the intake remodelling, smoothed it out, mostly, and laid on the paint coat. A little touching up, then I can do the markings, and start finer work like the landing gears and such.

I just obtained a Loose Cannon USS John S. McCain DL-3 kit, this week at the local IPMS meeting. I traded four DRAGON 1/700 Soviet sub kits for it. About ten years ago (probably more) I built the U.S. subs from those kits and had the USSR boats left.

Please tell me that you didn t trade a Delta IV for it. I f you did this will happen to me

I loved your little landing craft! Are they for a larger ship model? If so, which one? I don't remember.

There were two Alpha class subs, one Oscar, and a Typhoon.

Why so flustered about the Delta IV?

Then I sold, in the club auction, two 1/350 Alphas that were left over from building the Los Angeles class SSNs that were in the kits.

I made this ARTISENIA "Renard" french corvet in about two months, 11 years ago, before I got into 1/72 USN WWII aircraft for a bit and then took a break for about 10 years, until getting into plastic ship modeling last year. The "Renard" was my first wooden ship model and my first try at a sewing machine.

I've built a few planes and tanks over the years, but no big collection to speak of. My childhood models are mostly gone, now. I only have interest in ships, now.

Now, more back towards the thread topic.........

I made this pen holder for my desk in about 1990 when I was part of the Commissioning Crew on the USS Alexandria SSN-757. (I need to replace the top of the rudder and the screw.) The Commanding Officer liked it so, much that I had to hide it from him. I subsequently made a really nice one for him, too. I told him that I put extra glue on the boat to hold it to the base and I didn't want to catch him playing "Dive! Dive!" with it.

I've been working on painting the details and cleaning up the vertical-to-horizontal interfaces, after painting the decks Engine Gray.

I used the AB deck railings (4 or 5 bar railings) from the GMM 1/700 Modern USN/JMSDF PE set. I have to replace two sections of this after getting too, much paint in between the rails on them. That's not such of a problem with the 2 and 3 bar rails.

I'll have to admit - when I first saw Ed's post about a penholder, I hadn't seen the Alexandria yet, so I was left thinking "What? he's gonna drill the engine stacks and make it a penholder?" And then I went back a page and saw your Alexandria. Nice work, Carl, and I love the tale about the Skipper.

I didn't get the impulse to work on my projects today, once I woke up, but I'll likely work on it in the next couple days probably.
