michel lamarche wrote:Thanks . But I have a little problem. I wanted to build an Annapolis class destroyer because at the end of their life ,they were experimenting the new sonar(cantass ship) so I wouldn't have to scratchbuild the variable depth sonar .but I can't find very useful info on what is between the mast and the bridge.
The Improved Saint Laurent (ISL) destroyers had the variable depth sonar (VDS) handling system fitted to an open stern, and of those, HMCS FRASER (DDH 233) was the first Canadian ship to use towed array. She had her VDS handling system modified in the mid 1980s order to conduct operational and towing trials with the ETASS (Experimental Towed Array Sonar System).

After FRASER completed the towed array trials, HMCS ANNAPOLIS (DDH 265), sister ship to HMCS NIPIGON, was the first ship to be fitted with an operational towed array, which was essentially the Canadian version of the ETASS called CANTASS (Canadian Towed Array Sonar System). As part of the CANTASS fit, the open stern of ANNAPOLIS was closed in, and the entire towed array handling system was contained within the ship. That array was launched out of an overboard towing fairlead that was built into the stern, a practice which was continued with the Canadian Patrol Frigates (CPFs).

Both HMCS ANNAPOLIS and HMCS NIPIGON are ANNAPOLIS Class destroyers, and they were only the two ships in that class. They were also the last of the "steamers" to be built. NIPIGON was also fitted with CANTASS in the same manner as ANNAPOLIS (stern closed in).

As for what was located between the mast and bridge, on the ISLs there was an open bridge that was slightly behind and aft of the bridge, and adjacent to that was the "penalty boxes" where the lookouts were stationed. That area was slightly different and smaller on the two ANNAPOLIS Class ships and nothing was fitted there.

Ahoy, Michel - Have you an update about this project?

I am scratch-building HMCS Annapolis (DDH 265) with the SQS-504 VDS, in 1/600. She has slipped a little owing to other projects.

Darren's CD-ROM of photos is excellent and vital. It has views available nowhere else that I know of.

No not really,I did manage to build the 2 sides of the mast, then I got distracted by other projects.
Iam currently building the Nipigon (again) in 1/700 .this project started as an idea "why not build all 4 class of canadian navy destroyer.
So I build a master and tried to vacuum-form it.no success instaed of losing all the time involved I used the master and did a new model with it.
On top of that I was able to put my hands on a trumpeter richelieu and I am modifying her as the clemenceau.Sooner or later i will acquire Darren cd.I would like to post some pictures but I dropped my wife camera on the floor not too long ago ,result I am barred from touching her new camera.(for now I hope)

Very well done. I served on her from 1985 to 87 and really miss the old girl from time to time. Any idea if there is a kit on the market? My e-mail is Nipigon@live.ca

Bienvenue - For all ships Canadian: http://www.hawk-graphics.com/. Darren has considered a 1/350 kit, a better scale than 1/700 for a relatively small actual ship. He is the only source for Canadian navy grey paint.

There is no kit in 1/700. http://www.finewaterline.com/pages/kitrange/kits.htm once considered resin-casting the hull and basic superstructure of the pre-DELEX DDH series in 1/700 for craftsmen. Strictly speaking, the casting would not have been a kit. The craftsman modeler would supply all the detail fittings. No stock PE set known to me contains a 1/700 VDS of any type.

I am scratch-building sister HMCS Annapolis pre-DELEX in 1/600. I converted the hull of the Airfix kit of HMS Leander. I make my own PE. Otherwise this project would be impossible for me. Some other modeling projects have higher urgency since I am also writing articles about the actual ships, so Annapolis is on the back burner.

Hey does anyone have a 3D schematic Picture of the Nipigon.

We're restoring a 30+foot model of her and building a program to teach the kids as well.

Thanks!

May I ask where this model is?

I served on Saguenay from 71 to 78. In the same squadron as nipigon. Between the bridge and mast there was a pediastel that the 275 sight (firecontrol sight) was mounted on. on either side of the bridge were the 274 firecontrol sights about 10 ft aft of the lookout sponsons. they were about 3 ft in diameter and 4 ft tall a beach to get in and out of.
