Re: HMS Hood main mast, Part I
I love the way you pick out all these little details and add them, Foeth. Really bring the ship to life. Outstanding stuff.

Re: HMS Hood main mast, Part I
Thanks! I'm not sure if that sounding machine was present on the ship as sunk, but it looks quite nice. The bridge as on that pic is now "obsolete". Frank Allen pointed out that the deck aft of the conning tower has to be open. So, the Vickers emplacements were replaced last weekend.

And I have made a small wind baffle... If I'm ever going to do Yamato, I have some practice (though Tone is far more likely at the moment to be my next ship)

The deck near that wind baffle is next. John Roberts can up with a new sketch of the layout. A bit of guessing involved, but the sketch seems to be ok.

Re: HMS Hood main mast, Part I
I was scrapping parts of the admiral's bridge last evening, as it suddenly didn't resemble the photographs all. Suddenly? Apparently the deck in the AOTS isn't entirely correct. And I was thinking that the work involved and all the details still left to add, that a year only has 52 weekends of which, say, a quarter of those days is left for modeling, that 2009 is very optimistic... 2010? I'll try of course. Still have to finish the bridge, searchlights, pompoms, finish the 4" guns and boats & launches, derrick, small cranes, do another etch set, paint everything... the horror, the horror...
Why knows, perhaps it can be done. But of course, I can arrange for some thrashing without HMS Hood

Re: HMS Hood main mast, Part I
Your attention to detail really is outstanding! I can only hope to get the same level of detail in my rather larger Hood scratchbuild (which should be in the scratchbuild forum fairly soon).
Do you have any references/drawings for the layout of the open bridge in the 1941 fit? I couldn't find anything when I was building/detailing the Heller 1/400 Hood last year, and ended up just adding some voice pipes, a compass and a couple of signal lights in likely-looking positions.

Re: HMS Hood main mast, Part I
The only material I have is the Anatomy of the Ship series book and pictures. I bought the Shambrook marine pictures (not really adding anything to the AOTS book) and the polish volume (lots of speculation and suggesting detail that is not so good, making it thoroughly unreliable). The photographs are most important, many of which are availabe at the official Hood site. The book by Steve Wiper is really useful, showing the more important pictures at large format, so I usually have it lying around for a quick peek (my PC is currently not in the same room as the workbench)
For the new bridge layout, this pic was given by the official Hood site:

This was quite new to me, it seems to coincide rather well with what pictures I have. None of them show this layout, except that it "makes sense". I have the current part scheduled for destructive recontruction, pics will follow (someday
)
The admirals bridge deck, the one on the same height as the conning tower, it currently being reconstructed. It suffered the removal of all detail and I cut out a few parts of the deck. The new deck layout on the model includes a bit of speculation, and even some guesswork (!), but will be more correct than any model so far. The layout in the AOTS volume misses a few details (Still, that book is the backbone of my work). I think it's quite an additional, though I guess you have to be a Hood fan to really appreciate it, I guess?
The rest of the details follow from scratchbuilding: when you absolutely want to account for every pixel of each photograph, you start noticing things (so does my wife
). The new admirals bridge follows from pics I've seen for years. Funny how you sometimes miss details until you start working on that particular part. Now that the model is getting more and more completed, I frequently hold pieces against a photograph, showing what is missing or plain wrong.
All will be placed on my bloglet and the Hood site will usually publish the new finds (half of them are made by Frank Allen of the Hood site). I also want to make a page with all the known errors and guesses that are already present on the model....
And some info is missing. Haven't found a good drawing of the 44" searchlights. I fear they will be the absolute last parts to be built!

Re: HMS Hood main mast, Part I
Hi
My effort of new bridge after discovering the trumpeter model was wrong, it must be said that trumeter only got it wrong becouse it seems everyone else did
its not finished yet but the overall scale seems about right.
Thanks to john roberts and fw allen
for supplying sketch from my original enquiery...
Stunning work by the way Foeth

Some detail was added to the main rangefinder. The admirals bridge was also significantly modified but my image server is acting up!

VERY goood...!
So progress is being made...!!
Will you be painting it all in one go-or have you started with paint?
I wish I had your patience!!!!- how many years is this project on teh go now...?
The pursuit of perfection to your level I think would always elude me!

When the model is completed, I'll go to Telford. We'll have a beer, saw the model in half and count the rings!
The pursuit of perfection---actually a bit of a disadvantage---will show with the new pompoms

That would save me the enormous drive to get there
Haven't decided yet what Telford it will be. As always, I'll say it's the next one
Really, the model is nearly done!
