I apologize, I didn't mean to imply that all twin 5" mounts were the same. That is why I posted the photo of the Washington.
Again, my apologies, I should have been more specific.

5" turrets
Hello Paul,
No need to apologize as in a certain sense, you made a very wise remark about the 5" turrets ! I am pretty sure that few of us were aware of the subtle differences between the US Navy 5" turrets.
I must thank Steve Wiper in this respect, as when design of L'Arsenal turret began, Steve warned me about these differences and gave me direction to the right sources of information.
Your remark also made me thinking of starting work on a specific 5" turret for the batteships, that is as you said quite different of the ones embarked onboard the carriers.
So, thank you Paul !!!
Warmest regards from Normandie,

I think that would be a welcome accessory - I hope you go ahead and produce one. I certainly wasn't aware of the differences until I read the previous posts.L'Arsenal wrote:Your remark also made me thinking of starting work on a specific 5" turret for the batteships, that is as you said quite different of the ones embarked onboard the carriers.

Sounds like it would be a pretty popular item considering the number of U.S. BB's released in 1/350 over the last several years.

Just out of curiosity, which Mk. of 5-inch turret/mounting was used by the majority of USN "assembly line" cruisers (Atlanta, Cleveland, and Baltimore classes)? Plenty of subject choices there...!

What color would the life rafts be for Washington when she was painted Measure 12 Mod? Same as the bulkeads they are mounted on?
Thanks,

Generally, yes--sometimes, not. The photo posted previously is proof.

That pic is why I asked the question. I was not sure if the rafts were dark because of shadow or the paint washed off.RNfanDan wrote:Generally, yes--sometimes, not. The photo posted previously is proof.
I was wonder something about this platform mounted above the bridge. Is it round or teardrop shaped? Is a 20mm AA gun mounted there?

Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving,

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
In the photos of Washington in Ms. 12 mod posted on this thread, do the 16 gun barrels look darker than the parts painted 5-O? If so would they have been painted 5-N or Deck Blue 20-B?
Thanks.

If this is the photo taken while she is still wearing Ms12Mod, I believe the optical ranger finder was still mounted there.CWatson wrote:That pic is why I asked the question. As for the tops of the gun barrels, they normally would have been painted to match the deck. I have heard that Washington wore a lighter color than deck blue on her decks at this time, something more along the lines of Ocean Gray, but I can't recall the source and can't be sure.

Yes the pic was taken while she was in MS 12mod. As far as the barrels go they appear to be painted the same cover over all not just dark on top.MartinJQuinn wrote: If this is the photo taken while she is still wearing Ms12Mod, I believe the optical ranger finder was still mounted there.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
Hi
I'm building Trumpeter's 1/700 Washington and was wondering about the 50cal mgs. I'm modelling her after her Sept 42 refit and I can't see any in the pics of her at that time. Had they been removed during that refit or earlier? Or should they be modelled?
thanks
Mike

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
I can not spot any 50 cals in any pics on Washington after that refit. While on the subject of the light AA fit, I am working on the same kit and so far the hardest part was adding the third 20mm gun on each side aft of "B" turret.
Warship Pictorial pg.55 Shows 4x 20mm single mounts that are suppose to be mounted on the main deck just forward of "Y" turret during the refit but pictures showing the ship afterwards, pg.57 of the same book appears to only have three, just as before the refit. I do not know if that picture is mislabeled and is from another later refit or is from a different ship, I simply do not see a fourth gun in that area in other pics.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
Hi,
currently I'm building Trupeter's North Carolina at 1/350. While studying my reference pictures of the original ship, I was wondering if the upper parts of the funnels are right as they are on the model
.
I made this sketch to describe my problem

My question is: was the rear part open or closed? On some pictures in "Warship Pictorial" they seem to be open but maybe someone in this forum has further information. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Frank

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
amongst other things i've decided to jump into my trump NC. my question is, in MS32, would the 20MM and splinter sheilds on deck be painted deck blue, or would they be painted the corresponding grey / black scheme as on the hull / structure

Think vertical surfaces....hull and superstructure colors.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
I have seen on some design sheets (that is, the MS 32/3d for the Buckley class...) which states that the inside surfaces of the splinter shields should be in 5-O. This was a notation that was written during the experimental stage though, however.

This is my WIP for the Washington. My first step was to straighten out the hull so I epoxied a stout piece of hardwood to the inside of the hull. A piece of heavy aluminum plate keeps it flat.
I don't have the patience for trying to modify the kit deck so I used some Evergreen N scale siding that comes in 24" in sheets for a new deck.
I used some .010" x .020" Evergreen strips as the raised kick plate that goes around the deck.
I don't have a photo of this, but I carved the waterway just inside the kick plate.
I used some aluminum tubing to stiffen the first level of the superstructure. The pieces of acrylic rod are for location and mounting later. I was also able to reduce the height of the first level to correspond to the Floating Drydock drawings included in Randall Shokers book.
I found the anchor washboard cutout to be a bit challenging.
In the photo of the Washington's bow after the collision with Indiana, I saw no evidence of 20mm mount as there was in North Carolina. This photo is North Carolina.
This is my first steel ship since an old Revell Iowa when I was a wee lad so this is going to be an experiment to see if I can keep up with all the fine builders that I see on this site.
that is the coolest aluminum plate ive ever seen, i love, this like to be a monster
