Thanks, Magnus :thumbs_up_1: Are there any parts on the Lionroar set that won't be used on the Victorian Mikasa?

Timmy:

Just beware, the "Battle of the Japan Sea" edition does not have all the parts necessary for the Mikasa in 1904!

If that is the kit you have, you need the extra parts from the Eduard set and some extra booms, not to mention ventilators...

Full plastic only comes in the "Battle of the Yellow Sea" editon.

Here's a cool looking Mikasa done up in the black and white scheme...

Nice. That's exactly how I'd like to do my Mikasa, but of course I ended up buying the version without the fighting tops. Figures.

fighting tops

Post by moseydave »

Actually, I think you do have the fighting tops - parts G 42-44, which are marked as "not used" in the directions for the "Japan Sea" version - probably are the tops for the "Yellow Sea" version. Plus, you have a smaller boom - Q16 - that's greyed out in the directions, plus four extra ventilators (L31). So the only parts you're missing are the eight smaller ventilators around the funnels.

Guns

Post by masch3 »

There are also different guns for the secondary artillery on the fighting tops and midships artillery.

However, the necessary shields for these are on the Eduard set, as are the fighting tops.

Missing completely are the ventilators.

Thanks guys, good to know. I'll look into that when I dig her out. I have the Lion Roar set for the kit already, maybe some of those parts are in there as well.

Devin:

The Lion Roar set does NOT contain all the parts to make a 1904 Mikasa.

The Japan Sea version of the kit does NOT have the necessary plastic parts for the fighting tops. These parts are available in the Eduard set, though.

As we have established above, the Eduard set is best for those wanting to model the 1904 Mikasa.

There is also the issue with the VENTILATORS that are only in the Yellow sea kit.

I am building my 1904 Mikasa with the Eduard set and the LionRoar set. Leftovers are for the Japan sea kit, which will propably be waterlined.

I'm glad I'm doing the 1/700 version, far simpler...

masch, do you know what exactly is missing from the LR set for 1904 Mikasa? Can the missing stuff be easily added on by scratch?

Good to know, even though I hate the idea of having to buy another PE set for this kit, already having the Lion Roar and Gold Medal sets, but I did get the Lion Roar for next to nothing on eBay.

@ Timmy C:

You have to scratch the ventilators, add shields to the secondary guns on the mid-ship platform and the lower parts of the fighting tops.

I have gone through the instructions of the Japan Sea version and compared it with the Yellow Sea version and marked the missing parts. pm me your email and I'll mail you a scan. Then you can decide yourself if it is worth it to scratch what is missing.

The more I look at pics of Eduard's set (I don't have the set yet mind you) the less I like their shields for secondary armament and couple of other details. Have to check my sources over the weekend....

The best set of drawings of Mikasa that I have seen so far was published in Japanese language book "Battleships of IJN"part 1. If you PM me your email address, I will send you scans of those drawings.
