I didn't use a primer, this time. I don't plan to mask and paint anything on this one, so I only used the finish coat of Model Master Acrylic Neutral Gray and hand brushed Engine Gray on the decks. on the waterline models I've been using a Testors Gloss Black Ink Pen for the boot top instead of masking and painting it.
If I was going to use a primer, I'd probably use Mr. Surfacer. I've been given advice about some of the rough surfaces on my models. I guess that I need to thin the paint/primer and keep the nozzle of the air brush closer to the model to minimize the paint/primer from drying in between the air brush and the model. I've been keeping this in mind. I've had the same problem with my clear coats turning whitish because of the same incorrect technique. The whitish effect really shows up on the lower anti-fouling red on full hull models.

Thanks for the info. I'm also still looking for the best method(s) to apply the paint(s). My biggest fear is always hand painting the decks after having brushed the vertical areas. All is good until I start hand brushing. I've tried airbrushing the decks first then masking them on my CG 59, which didn't give the best result and wouldn't really work for those kind of ships which don't have as many stealthy features with nice and smooth areas. That's why I'm always interesting in learning other methods.
I've never used any primer, but will see if I can get my hands on the one you suggested for future experiments

I seemed to lose a piece out of my trumpeter CVN 71 kit. It is one of the bridge pieces (P-6). Does anyone know how to get in touch with Trumpeter to order a new sprue for the kit? Do there even offer that kind of customer service?
They should, off their website - www.trumpeter-china.com - if you pop them an email, but for some reason they aren't responding to the last couple - you might pop their info email a question as well.

I can propose an alternative way to solve this problem if what Simon suggested doesn t work. You may go to HLJ website and order the sprue of the missing part. This will take a while until you receive the requested part but in the end you ll get it.

Had you needed parts for the hangar I might have helped you as I will not open the front door but the island can not really be hidden
Please let us know how the HLJ thing works, if you can (How long does it take, how much do they ask for a sprue..). That sort of information is quite valuable for the community

Does HLJ do this with other companies' sprues as well??? I can think of a few I'd like to get my hands on, and Trumpy can be a little slow to respond at times. Yeah, I can see the potential benefits from that. If I can go through HLJ and get things done that way, it'd be nice, though I doubt I can get Italeri through them, that would be too lucky.

I have used the parts service of HLJ with success so far. You must send an email at parts@hlj.com indicating the part(s) you need and the rest is up to them. They contact the company and they get the stuff you want. For Trumpeter parts it will not take too long (it took 2 weeks for the part i asked for) since they will contact Pitroad which produces the same kits under their own label.

I doubt that this will work with Italeri since they do not carry many Italeri kits but it will do with most other companies.
What parts are you interested in??
