I have seen many sea dioramas, and one in particular that took my eye, the water was transparent (perhaps a little to transparent) I brought water effect which arrived today, its bright blue, thick and takes 24hrs to set, quite disappointed with it. Is there a U.K site where I can buy a transparent sellf-leveling water effect. Basically, I wanted a harbour with the view the of old wooden legs holding up the dock, and a few fishes swimming about. It will probably never look like this, but I'd like to give it a go. There are many sites that show you how to do, but very few that tell you what to use and where to buy. Any help in this matter would be great.

Thank you Jim, this sort of thing I can only build in my dreams, Edgar's work on those docks are nothing short of incredible, the 1-48's I suppose allow you to play around much more then the 1-700's due to sheer scale, but nevertheless, a very skillful man. A lot of reading, you weren't kidding, I fell asleep twice. Seriously though, the information was very good.

In my continuing search for water, water everywhere and not a drop worth buying, I've already metioned the bright blue gunk, then there's hard water which is resin based, great for small dioramas and way too expensive for something on the scale I'd like, then as someone suggested something called acrylic gel, this is white and clears to an almost transparent finish, the maker is Spectrum, the full detail name - acrylic gel medium, and I brought 1 litre for �26.00 inc shipping, I tested this inside an old jar lid, 5mm deep, this was 2 days ago, and not only hasn't it set, its also still very white. So, I've now gone back to my old builders day and kitchen and bathroom sealant silicone, stinks like hell, but will set clear in 2 days, buy from any D.I.Y shop and dirt cheep, I've also brought a sheet of water effect on a roll of all things, I might use this for when I build the 1-350 Yorktown as this kit comes with full or half hull. Water/sea effect using gel, I can only assume like models there many types, and Spectrum most certainly isn't one of them. This wouldn't have been so much of a problem if I was going to paint the surface of the sea, but like I said, I wanted it nice and clear.

Acrylic gel is not meant to be used in very thick layers - certainly no more than 2 millimeters at a time (exception for the waves and such). If a thick water is desired with it, one will have to do it in separate layers, or else have extremely long drying time.

I am keen to try your method of making water and have a few questions. I hope you don't mind, and apologies if this has been covered before or I've missed something.
1) Will 90lb watercolour paper work? or is it too thin?
2) Is the paper attached to the base with the double-sided adhesive tape? Or does the CA glue attach it to the base?
3) How do you immerse the paper in CA glue? And where to you get such a large amount?
4) Do you use the Acrylic gel medium just for the waves or do you cover the entire space with it?
5) After you have painted the seascape and made all the waves with the fluff etc., do you brush on a clear coat?

I know I'll have to experiment, but all help is greatly appreciated.

No problemo!-- glad you will give it a whirl !!

It is a bit thin--and fragile...--the thicker the paper--the deeper the embossing...
I am experimenting with some 300 lb paper...

Aaarghh!!! The fatal flaw in my description... the paper is attached using Venture doublesided tape( I will add that shortly!!)

You can either: use the Pink( runny) Zap superglue ( made by Pacer)-- it comes in various size bottles -

or you can buy el cheapo industrial type CA--as used by window/kitchen installers-- it comes in much bigger quantities
and is fine for the purpose of infusing the paper-which the renders it impermeable to moisture--and also ensures it keeps any shape that has been induced.

I use it only for bow and quarter waves - I let the texture of the paper show though the remainder of the water

I brush on the clear coat BEFORE I apply the fluff--otherwsie the fkluff would go all soggy!

I have found using DAS modelling clay very effective as it is very slow drying and can be modelled into very effective shapes plus it can be sanded and sawn once dry

Anyone got any photos/suggestions for doing river water, specifically the Mississippi, in 1/600 scale? I'm thinking of sculpting, using Aves Apoxie Sculpt, but thought I'd ask.

Hi Jim, Read all your wave making information and the links you mentioned. All great stuff. You boys sure have it down to a great science. All aboard take great pride in what you have given to novice like myself. I have sure learned alot.
I am curious about your approach to the color of the wave. Are all your waves pure white? Or do you ever give them a touch of off white? Any reason why? Ever use a touch of FUTURE to touch them off with?

I used to work by the ocean, a small port actually, and notice the water would have different shades dependent on the time of day..

Almost tinged with red or pink at Sunrise, shades of blue or green during the day, grey when overcast, purple at sunset.

How would one do these effects with water in diorama other than using colored overhead lights?

Same with the ships but that is another post. Have seen Haze grey turn Pink dependent on the time of day. Pink Haguro anyone?

Perhaps you can put it against a background that's a photograph of a sunset/rise, so that the light reflected off the background will hit the water and environs?

I'd try transparent coloured paper (such as the kids use to make paper lanterns) and a torch/flashlight.

I would just modify Jeff Hernes acrylic gel method for simulated water by suggesting that the baseboard be painted BEFORE the gel is applied . That way you get a clearer water effect

Hey guys, one question of the acrylic gel method; WHICH acrylic gel do you/can you use? I was looking on the shelf in Michael's and there's several different kinds. There's Heavy, Matte, Medium, some have varnish, etc... There isn't one tub that just says acrylic gel medium on it. Was just wondering which one(s) were usable before I start buying the tubs at $15-20 each.

Don't get the Slow-Dri one - that one takes several days to dry if applied in large amounts...much to my dismay
