Calling all Soviet Kirov-class (Орлан) Project 1144 & Slava-class (Атлант) Project 1164 fans

I still wonder about those vertical guards(?) projecting down around the prop area. I've never seen anything like that before. Maybe someone else will have some photos to offer.

Roel and I have been trying to get clear photos of them for awhile now. We've seen some similar structures on some other Soviet/Russian craft.

BTW: Trumpeter 1/350 Frunze also has the wrong radar configuration, it has got Top Plate instead of Top Steer. The same mistake as Kirov kit.

I think I recall that the tracks on the Sovremennies were used to move torpedoes around on carts. - I suppose on the Kirov class they could be used similarly for moving heavy objects.

Bob, on the SAM shooters before the vertical launch system we carried a dolly that could be used to transfer missiles between missile houses/magazines - it rolled on solid rubber tires. It was a cumbersome and time consuming process that the Gunnersmate, Missiles were graded on. Its value was in a wartime if a casualty prevent use of one of the launchers. I have never learned the purpose for the these rails, perhaps maintenance inport. Half the instruments/switches in their jets are for ground maintenance, so maybe the same applies here. On the Sovremmenys I had learned that they are mine rails. I can imagine no greater trip hazard and preservation challenge than those rails - think of the pockets for rust. Given what I have observed first hand on Soviet/Russian ships, those rails are no doubt coated with paint - hiding corrosion and impeding operation.

I've just started the Kirov 1/350, there are some problem of the SS-N-19 lauchers' cover. For Trumpeter version, in both 1/700 and 1/350. They have some "rims" on top, I have build a Dragon 1/700 before, their version looks more correct!! I've also search for detail photos... Look like I have to remove all the extra detail from Trumpeter!!
Could anyone gave me some advise. Thanks!!

Looks like you will have to somehow remove all the ridges without destroying the hinges and eyehooks.
The difficulty is that the ridges seem to be at the proper height of the cover. Removing them will mean that the surface will be a little lower than it actually is. This can probably be fixed by adding a layer of thin paper on top and then scratchadding the lost details.
Tedious work though.

Since my dad has passed away I have found out some drawings are not quite right but remember my dad drew these plans with information available at the time.

About the SS-N-19 hatch covers raised cross-hatched marking, I agress there should be some structures underside...but all photos we can find showing that the covers look like so "flat", no matter what it should not like Trumpeter's...may no only a letter "dimpling" as Carr said. I think I will remove them and scratch built back the detail

The picture is probably from a Sovremenny or some ship with exposed torpedo tubes, unlike the Kirovs with the hidden tubes.

You are right. This photo is from Sovremenny Class destroyer.

I don't know the history of the pictures so I can't say whether they've been altered. I agree that the red/brown deck color is much deeper/darker/redder than other color images which tend more to an orangish color. The photo is probably of Velikiy - being more modern, maybe a different paint, or just freshly applied?? I have other shots of Velikiy, all of which show the more common orange/brown so I suspect that something about this particular shot is "off". Maybe exposure or something - I'm not a photographer so I'm out of my depth here.

Talking about the colors of deck. There are some photos of PV showing her with part of the deck in black:







I think that these photos were taken at the same time. One can notice that red/brown on picture 2 and 3 looks quite different. I believe it is effect of color correction, lighting or something.

My dads plans have the correct colours needed but I'm having troubles scanning them. I will try to rescan at my sisters place over Easter but will not be able to post till after Easter. The Kirov class has 4 major colours. A lighter grey for the superstructure, a slightly darker grey for the hull (very hard to see the difference between them but there is one), a rusty red for the deck in some places and a brown colour in others and below the waterline. The scan is ok but when I print it the colours don't print correct.
