What particular ship are you describing? If it's for the Gorshkov, Their conning tower or "island" is actually placed more to the starboard and not on the middle. Almost NO aircraft carrier has an island placed on the middle, as what was a lesson learned from a WW1 British carrier launching and landing faulty biplanes with a huge island on the middle!. It's clearly evident on this photo of Gorshkov:
And besides, the Kiev class are actually designed to accomodate helicopters and specifically not for jet aircraft although they also launch jets, hence the small area for deck space.
If it's in the case for Vikramaditya, The position of the island is practically unchanged, only some slight modifications, as what is seen in your photo of the the two ship's comparison. only the deck edges were extended for deck space and for launching aircraft. (I think),....
