How to do railings without photo etch?

HI folks a newbie here so sorry if this has been asked a million times. How were railings etc. done in the days before photo-etch? I am on a tight budget but I'm great with scratchbuilding, so any hints?

I do mainly 1/72nd scale and use plastic rod. I assemble it one piece at a time. I set the uprights first and then put in the cross pieces. I use Tamiya glue and when that's set I put Ambroid Liquid Glue on the joint. Hope this helps.

I have the 1/700 Tamiya Indianapolis, I had thought of using a hard wire for uprights and thin copper wire for the rails themselves,

I have some US style railings left over as I don't make many US kits and I have moved to ultra-fine anyway. Send me your address by pm and I will mail them to you, should be enough for one cruiser at least. May have a few other bits too.

Can be done by making a wooden frame or box, putting nails in the sides, make grooves in the edges the spacing of the stanchions one one side and the rails on the other side. The rail side of the box slightly higher than the stanchion side. Then string the whole thing with hairline copper wire like a guitar. Then pour thin superglue over the whole thing. When dry cut out some very thin and wery fragile rails.
