Hi Guys,
The main battery turrets are finished, but for paint.
The detour backwards took a week and a half. The scratch-built range finders and some final finish work have satisfied me that, "whenever it's better to scratch build something than use a kit resin part with marginal quality, do it!"
Some pics of the finished turrets......

Hi Guys,
Some extra time to spend today on models.
I set everything up on the main deck that's not too tiny for a picture.
Here is the Honolulu and the Benjamin Stoddert together. The DDG is my postponed-till-Honolulu-is-finished-project.
The DDG was to be my Nats build, but then Honolulu is my intended Nats entry.....still.
Notice the similarities between these two models...........give up?
They're both at the same state of progress roughly. Should I start another project now???
Oh wait. I have Missouri, Renshaw and Eagle out there in the que.....not to mention two 1/96 ships!
Image

Guns 1-3....some filling had to be done to a coupld of the turrets after applying the Standard Navy Grey. Good thing I mixed a large batch!
Image

Image

Here is the starboard side of the hull after some serious sanding of the armor belt. These will look better if re-applied with new strip plastic. Plus, I've got to do much more sanding and filling on the hull. After I primered it.......oh my!

Have a good Memorial Day Gentlemen!

Hi Tony,

Lookin' good dude :thumbs_up_1:

I agree with your thought of replacing the armor belt with a plastic strip...your still early in the build and now whould be the time!...I considered replacing the armor belt on my New Orleans if for no other reason than eliminating a little hull seam work, but wouldn't you know it the armor belt section had the best fit!...also a real ship had the extra armor "applied" to the hull not sprouting out of it.

...just my 0.00025/cents!

She's really coming together Tony. You've got a little less than three months to finish her in time for the Nationals - go for it!

Tony, I think you need to work on the 1/96 scale models myself...... Chad

Hi Guys,
Chad,
Hi! 1/96 DDG now has funnels. Started the 1/96 Knox at DM's house a week ago Friday.
The Honolulu is coming along slowly. I have found the prop shaft, strut layout and will have to do some work to make from scratch the enture, "drivetrain". I did do some painting between Sunday and last night. The turret stripes and T-2 and the red top to T-4 have been painted, and the upper three levels of the fwd superstructure. Same old thing; one hour masking and 15 minutes painting!
Pics when able, Tony

Hi Guys,
.........late night-er.....
I have spent many days and eves getting work done on Honolulu. This time it's the props/shafts/struts that needed to be done. The cast metal struts were too much trouble to prep and re-shape. I opted to make some strut assemblies from .10" diam plastic tubing and the legs from .030" x .125" and cut to length/re-shaped to match the drawings. As can be seen from the pics, I re-located all of the shafts: exits and strut locations, (both intermediate and primary), as the model did not match the drawings and pictures, (what few there are). As a result of thius finding, some filling and sanding was needed. Plus, the bottom of the hull was a bit too round in the prop strut area, and was accordingly, "flattened".
Hull, drawings and mostly completed shaft/strut/prop assemblies.
Image

The new locations for the prop shaft hull exits still need to be cut, and the entire shaft etc. assemblies test located afterwards. If necessary, the strut legs will be shortened a little to stay true to the drawings. The only thing I can't really do is to accurately re-shape the hull bottom and then make everything fall into place; hypothetically. That's as far as I'll go with this part of this build.
Image

Image

I have also done a lot of painting lately, but I'll post pics of that stuff later; when all of the sub-assemblies are actually finished.
Also, the prop strut assemblies will not be permanently added onto the hull until after I have successfully drilled the needed 300 or so air-portholes on the hull sides.
I've been putting that task off for as long as possible.

Nice work Tony - those look sharp. Props and shafts are one reason I prefer waterline!

Hi Guys,
The latest fixation: catapults. I machined down the cast-in catapult mounting points on the hull to allow usage of the L'Arsenal catapults, as the l'Arsenal catapult round bases are quite detailed. PROBLEM I could not exactly machine the bases to the deck perfectly, so I cleared away an area to mount the L'Arsenal catapults. NOW I have to replace the missing scribed deck detail and non-scribed deck detail immediately around the catapult bases. The model will look better with the L'Arsenal catapults, so that's my motivation for another exercize in, "taking 2 steps back, and 1 forward"......again!

I washed the p/e fret in methanol and primered it with Tamiya clear and sky grey. We'll see how well the primer bends and then I'll paint it the final color.

Hi Guys,
Some quick overall progress pics....
These are raw un-touched-up recently painted areas. I got the Standard Navy Grey 5 to the shade I prefer; a little bit of white was added.
The p/e railings and ladders will be added to each s/s sub assembly before I attache the deck levels to each other and then to the mian deck.

Looking good Tony as expected. My Hornet is dragging on as well as the Arizona. I have to light a fire under my butt to get it in gear. See ya.
