Weathering a Super Carrier flight deck

A carrier straight out of re-work will have a new looking deck nice lines etc. At the end of a gulf cruise the lines will be worn almost off in spots, new in places where they have been touched up. At the end of my first cruise aboard the Nimitz in '87 a good portion of the landing area was worn down and had greasy/rusty bare metal surface. The lower island structure was blackened with exhaust, pretty ratty looking. Modern non-skid wears somewhat better but after the last cruise of the USS Constellation her deck had a lot of bare spots in the LA as well.

When you say you use water paint. What exactly are you refering to.?
Do you mean regular water color..??

For anyone modelling in the LARGER SCALES, 1/96 upwards, then a good effect is to use rough grade wet and dry paper, stick it down with a waterproof adhesive. This can then be sprayed over with a dark tarmac coloured paint and given a coat of matt varnish for the final effect. Unless of course you are modelling one of the pre-war wooden deck carriers.
