- This is what I found in "Naval weapons of WW2" by John Campbell, page 193 "There were one or two hoists per mounting, and it was noted in the aircraft carrier Katsuragi that supply was by one electric dredger hoist that came about 32m (35yd) and at least two bulkheads from the mounting..." . Therefore, I believe that for this gun, hoists were quite distant from the mount, i.e. ammunition supply was manually performed from the hoist to the gun loader. Maybe, but it's just an assumption, the system was a bit different for the blast proof 5" shielded guns. In this particular case, a dredger hoist could be placed in the structure beneath the mounts, much closer to them, making faster the whole ammunition supply process.

Katsuragi was constructed as part of a war emergency program, so it is not clear whether all her internal arrangements and fittings followed normal IJN practice, or whether her design, layout and fitting might have been simplified and certain normal items omitted to enable her to meet accelerated schedule of the program.

Regarding Skuski's drawings, several other more recent illustrations of Yamato's blast proof 5" shield also fail to show any access hatch suitable for men to either go through or hand round in through on the side or in the back of the shield. So I think these mounts can only be access or supplied from below. The problem with a dredger hoist coming to the point directly below the mount is how can the round then be handed up into the mount so that the aperture for this is never blocked by parts of angle at any degree of train, and the aperture in the floor does not inconvenience the loaders in the heat of action.

One thing about Yamato's blast proof shields is those shields were removed from the original guns and shifted to cover newer guns installed later. After the shields have been removed, the inside of the gun tub was exposed, and a standard Japanese 5" mount was revealed. But there is still no evidence of any new door on hatch in the back wall of the alcove where these mounts are located that could serve as a passage for men handing ammunition to the standard open mount. So if the original shielded mount received its ammunition from some hoist coming up from below, the new open mount must still receive ammunition the same way.

Hey Phil,

You should definitely write up a build log and document this great project step by step, in a blog form or something. The ship's turning out to be really majestic and I can't wait to see her completed.

I know Al has suggested that the Yamato was probably in pristine condition even towards the end considering she was the jewel of the IJN, but all the rust and dirty spot on your model will simply make her look battle hardened!

There are photos showing Yamato in a seriously weatherbeaten condition in Truk much earlier in the war.

You're right, Mperor. As we can see on the Yamato movie also, the battleship was always in optimal conditions (the wooden deck, main and secondary armaments and every single boxroom: as you know there was a severe discipline from this point of you on board of the IJN ships), but I'm a simple modeler and this is my 4th building project on this battleship (the 2nd Nichimo (plus 2 1/350 Tamiya), the 1st one I built 10 years ago was "pristine, aka new and clean" like that from the Kure's arsenal during his launch) so I decided to go on "rust and dirty" to build something different without go after all the documentation concerning this great ship.
Chuck was right also, I saw those photos (August 1942, during operations in the Solomon Islands and on December 1943, when Yamato was hit by a torpedo fired by the US submarine "Skate" near Truk (as for AOTS from Skulski), but I voluntarily weathered much more the ship 'cause I like how it looks.

And yes, I'll write up a build log to document the project, it's only a matter of time...
See you.

Hey Phil,

That's so cool. So you got more than one of these? Whoa.

I also built a 1/350 Yamato and Musashi from Tamiya... but they're out of the box... I'm still a beginner at this, pretty much, and the PE typically guts my wallet, so... Yeahhh... They're not that interesting, besides Musashi's night camo deck.

But the 1/200 kit is my ultimate modeling goal.

I too love that weatherbeaten look you're working on now. I'm amazed it's just your 4th project. You're a very good painter! There's certainly a lot to learn from the techniques.

What do you use to give it this look? Dry pastel... or...?

I never weathered a ship, so I have no clue...

Can't wait for the next batch of pictures!

(Sorry, I'm a Yamatoholic as well, lol the 1/350 was my first ship that I built...!)

Hello, Mperor.
Nothing special, the techniques are always the same: you have only to practice on a cheap model and use your taste.
After the Kure Arsenal grey, there are drybrush, washing techniques, Tamiya weathering master products and Mig pigments.
Try to practice on the pieces that are left over your old Tamiya kits. What do you use to paint your models? Spray cans or airbrush?
Show me some of your works and ... don't worry, also YOU CAN!!!, don't forget.

Hey Phil,

I see. Like I said, I've never weathered any ships, so I don't know the techniques yet... I can probably look 'em up when the time comes.

I mostly use the spray cans for large surfaces like the hull or other pieces of the sprues, and I also use brushes to go for the areas that are not sprayable. The results are... so so.

I've been wanting to submit some pictures on here too, but I don't have access to a camera at this point.

I've wanted to repaint my Yamato's 'orange-wood' deck into the actual grey-tan color it was in during her last voyage, but I've had a lot of trouble 'finding' that color. I use a type of acrylic, and have been trying to get that color through mixing - with no success.

I might suggest you start with light colours on both ends - the gray, regardless of however you do it, will likely darken down your tan deck no matter how you look at it. Alternately, you might try a transparent paint layer, like Vallejo Smoke, brushed over with light, fast strokes with a flat brush to provide a light layer over the deck tan - You can achieve some very interesting effects with transparent paints over other colours - and it might give you the soot-washed or a dark-weathered look. It will also give you a slightly inked look as well, with the recessed lines being accented.

I myself use Acrylics, and swear to the high heavens by Vallejo - yes their paints will retain softness for a little time, bear in mind this and treat them gently for a few hours, maybe a day - this is also equally wonderful if you're doing cockpit lines though, as I don't mask my canopies and with the round edge of my pin vise, or other tools, simply give it a gentle scrape to get the paint off the framing lines to clean it up.

That's some interesting thoughts, Sauragnmon.

I've also tried usi8ng my hand to add various shades of tan to the deck to make it look wooden, but since my strokes are always parallel, it ended up looking terrible...

I'll mix up some colors some day, I think. Or maybe I'll keep the current orange deck... =\

I don't know yet.

With regard to "pristine" ship, these photos are from 1/35 model used for the Yamato movie (I love the "dust" effect  )

Hi,

WOW this 1/35 Yamato is outstanding.

Can you specify where it is located?

Many thanks in advance,

Hey Phil,

I saw that you're planking the ship one board at the time. that must be crazy time-consuming... but the effect probably will be great and realistic!

I'd assume you'll only paint the deck after you're done planking the whole ship?
