Calling all USS Barnegat-class seaplane tender (AVP) fans

The turret is from Corsair Armada. They are excellent, except for the barrels. The blast bags are nice, but the barrels are a little squared off.

And I think that the place that the side doors are marked at are a little too, high. When I drilled out the openings for the doors, I stayed within the raised molded marks for placement of the PE doors, according to the instructions, and they look a little too, high on the wall of the turret.

In the photos, below, the step up from the bottom of the turret to the base of the door doesn't seem to be such a large step up as on the model turret's door.

I'm thinking about seven or eight PT Boats, a utility boat, or bowser boat, and maybe a whale boat or gig in the water with one or two accommodation ladders hanging down. This ship had three boat booms on each side, so a few of those will be rigged, as well.

One thing that I like about 1/700 is that I can get away with not adding particular details that were on the real ship, but you'd probably not be able to see, or notice that its missing, on the model.

I'm still a "700 Man". Don't worry! I am eager to get back to my Postwar USN collection. I'm on a roll with this PT Boat Tender and I plan to finish up my Coast Guard 311' Cutter, soon. I love these little AVP ships!!

Carl, As a Newbie to the forum, I want to say that looking over your shoulder, while you're working on the Coastie 311, brings back many memories.

My first cutter out of boot was the CGC ABSECON (WAVP-374), then at Berkeley Mooring, up the Elizabeth Rver, across from the Hammerhead crane at NAVSHIPYARD Portsmouth.

A sailor's first ship is like his first love. ABSECON is mine.

Carl, As a Newbie to the forum, I want to say that looking over your shoulder, while you're working on the Coastie 311, brings back many memories.

My first cutter out of boot was the CGC ABSECON (WAVP-374), then at Berkeley Mooring, up the Elizabeth Rver, across from the Hammerhead crane at NAVSHIPYARD Portsmouth.

Thanks for the kind words! I love these little ships, no matter what configuration! Have you seen Richard Sliwka's USS Absecon AVP-23 in the Modelers' Gallery, here on MWS? It was the example that I used to build my first Iron Shipwrights USS Mackinak AVP-13 kit, into the USS Duxbury Bay for my Dad. Richard's is really nice!

Have you thought about getting one of these kits and making one into the USCGC Absecon? There are some really nice photos of the Absecon on NavSource.org. I have a few others that may not be there. I have a model for each of the subs that I served on.

How do you prounounce ABSECON, anway, exactly?

or, as we did in our best Southern Drawl "ABS-ECON!" The Best in Dixie.

I am afraid that I do not have the motor skills available any more to build her. I'll enjoy watching you and others do for me..

Interesting note on your CGC BEARING STRAIT history. She was not just turned over to the RVNN, in the livery that you have her painted, she carried a joint USCG\RSVNN for some time befor she was turned over. Also the History of the RVN does no list the 26 82 foot coastal patrol boats that wre turned over the the South. But back to the BS, she was just coming back with the joint crew when my ship the CGC RUSH was departing, and we briefed the crew on OUTCHOP.

Worked on a whale boat for a little while.

I've been experimenting with different Plastruct water effect clear plastic sheets. This one is "Clear Choppy Water". Choppy in what scale? Hmmph! Looks pretty calm for 1/350.

I think that it will be this sheet that I will go with for my diorama. It comes in 14"x24" sheets, too. I hope that all copies of this sheet don't have the little circle dimples stamped in them, like this one does. You can see it in one of the photos, below. Looks like a thumb tack got caught in the stamping/molding machine.

On this 7" x 12" sheet, I have air brushed Model Master Enamel Flat Sea Blue on one half and Model Master Enamel Blue Angel Blue on the other half. Both sides got a Model Master Gloss Coat, and then a light, swirly air brushing of Model Master Acrylic Teal. I intend to clear coat this and then do a dusting with the air brush of Model Master Acrylic Aircraft Carrier Type 1 (green) for added depth effect.

I am portraying the USS Oyster Bay in Leyte Gulf in Oct/Nov 1944 and I would imagine that the waters were rather tropical and a blueish-green, I'd guess. Especially near the shore lines. She anchored in San Pedro Harbor at times, I'm lead to believe, and a vet of the ship told me that the ship would even go up rivers, at times. (13' draft)

This is the Plastruct "Agitated Water" sheet. It looks more choppy than the "Choppy Water" sheet is. Depends on the intended scale, I guess.

I'm using this for my Navy Base diorama in 1/700. I like it for that one, and it would be my second choice for this 1/350 Oyster Bay diorama.





Here, I've added the Model Master Acrylic Aircraft Carrier Type 1 (green). It surrounds the PT Boat where the PT Boat is sitting in the Blue Angel Blue and Teal effect.

This one is the Plastruct "Stormy Water" sheet. I used it on my 1/350 PBM-3 Mariner dio.

The one thing that I don't like about this one is that, here and there, in some of the larger troughs between the swells, it is totally flat and not even the least bit rounded high or shallow.

Edit: Now that I look at it closer, it depends on which side of the sheet you have facing up. One side does look better than the other.
