I`ve added the aft shelter deck ,along with the offending 4" deckhouses,if I was building the 39 to 41 version these would need to be corrected,to a smaller three sided shape,topped with a single 4" gun .The rails on the A/C catapult have been painted with steel colour,and some of the smaller deck details have been added.

I`ve attached a photo of the real thing,hopefully this is how I want the finished model to look.I think it must have been taken about 1938.it`s proving very useful!
Also attached are two views of the progess so far.I`ve used the kit PE,it`s not at all bad,couldn`t wait for GMM,or WEM fret to arrive!
I would like to ask for help concerning the colour of the decks on the Flag-deck and above .Could they have been covered with Corticene(?),as per the Hood?or were they painted Dark Gray.Anybody with any ideas ,please let me know,all help gratefully received.Thanks ,Phil

The two funnels have been assembled,and as far as I can tell ,there are no mods needed for the pre-war version.A nice touch is the opened tops to the steam-pipes.I`ve left the funnel caps off,until the boatdeck is in place,this is because it slips over the aft funnel,and it is a bit of a tight squeeze already.
I`ve removed the two 20mm tubs,and ammo boxes,alongside the conning tower,and re-shaped the deck,as these aren`t needed for the pre-war model.Canvess dodgers were fitted to the deck-rails in this area,and I plan to do these a slightly lighter gray,off-white in fact.

It looks like they'll be dark grey like your other horizontal decks.... I assume that those D grey decks are covered in corticene?

In WW1, the? (some?) corticene was matt brown*, (the colour of milk chocolate) [The lion class and others) while Hood had red corticene (like a post office van).

I'd have a look back thru the finished models arcive on these 1;700 and 1/350 model sites and look for your shp amoung 'em.

'Matt Brown'... sounds like a reciever for the Philidelphia Eagles!

When I built the Airfix Repulse I asked the same question regarding deck colours and the answers were not definitive. The way I painted the decks was to paint the Conning tower deck in dark grey along with the hangar roof. All the other levels of the forward structure have been painted in corticene. For the aft part I painted the top of the shelter in corticene but left the masts platform in dark grey.

Hope that helps a bit. I'll try to post a picture later to show what I'm trying to explain. Picture speaks for themselves

Thank you ,gentlemen,I think,I`ll go the Sylvain way,all decks above the conning tower deck,will be painted Corticene.

I nearly forgot to add the deck-railings on the shelter-deck,these would have been nearly impossible to attach,once the boat-deck had been fixed in place.As can be seen from the pic,hardly any detail on this deck can be seen,but at least it`s there!
The two decks have been attached,no fit problems at all.Next up is to detail these decks,and then work my way upward.

She's looking GRAND! I'm following your buildup very closely, the distributor for my kit of Repulse is replacing the defective forward gun turret and will have a replacement in hand this week. I truly hope to get going on this project soon.

Back to the rear superstructure now,I`ve removed the Pom-Pom pedestal mounting,as this will be replaced by a triple 4" mount.As far as I can tell,no other mods are needed for this area (no doubt I`ll find something later on).I received some ISW B/D turrets from their QE kit,(Many thanks Roger),which I`ve test fitted to the deck-house,may need reducing in height a little,but ,otherwise it seems to be fine.

I was in a bit of a quandary ,as to where the missing third anchor chain ended,but ,luckily I found a photo on page 100 of "Churchill`s Navy",which was taken from the `Eyes ` of the Repulse ,and this clearly shows the unused chain,and where it`s attached to,and it`s a lot cleaner than the two in use!I`ve replaced the chain with something smaller(Thanks again,Roger!).
The incorrect "Gash-shute" has been removed,as per RNfanDans post on "calling All ship fans",and I`ve re-painted the flying deck with a darker brown,and I`ve removed the vent ,at the end of this struture(Thanks Dan),just needs a bit of re-touching now.The Funnels have been capped,and the kit PE was used for the grills.A start has been made on the Bridge area,this is the next job.

After attaching the lower bridge,I decided to add the canvess dodgers.I made these by thinning down some Microscale Kristal kleer with a little distilled water,and appling to the gaps in the PE rails,with a old fine brush.When this was thoroughly dry ,I painted both sides,a slightly lighter shade of gray,and attached to required areas with PVA glue.This is first time I`ve tried this method,it seems to work really well.You can still bend the railing,if anything it`s stronger.
I`ve added the Searchlights to the required places on the lower bridge,after first lowering the splinter screens by 1/10th of an inch,to bring it in line with the pre-war version.I must say ,these are some of the best s/lights I`ve seen in a kit

Work has continued on the lower bridge area,I`ve made the DCT,and added some supporting struts to the rangefinders.I`ve thinned the edge of the bridge deck bulkheads,I think Trumpy should have made this as seperate parts,but you can`t have everything!They have included four 3pdr saluting guns in the kit,these would not have been carried in wartime,I not grumbling though,it saves me having to make them.I`m beginnning to think that Trumpy couldn`t make their mind up,as to what time-period the kit was supposed to be for,still it`s a good kit otherwise.

I`ve decided to to leave the upper reaches of the bridge structure `til later on ,this is because there are a couple of yardarms ,that a ham-fisted old fool might knock-off.So,I done the ships-boats instead ,looking at the plan in the R & R book the layout and number of boats didn`t alter very much,except that the peace-time boats would have been a lot more "Tiddley".I`m planning to replace the odd shaped boats (part #G3)with something more suitable.

Very nice Phil! I have almost done with the Barham boats, I'm going to finish the Admiral barge ( I modified a steam pinnace ) this week end, perhaps it could be usefull for your Repulse.

The lower mainmast has been made,and a pipe that runs from deck level has been added,also some railing round the small aft facing platform.I`ve added numerous small parts around various areas of the superstructure,this kit is far more complicated than Trumpy`s earlier Hood kit.I filled-in the centres of the Carley floats ,and made some ships badges from some 400th scale RAF roundels,as these were needed to go on the Carley float covers.The ships Battle-Honours have been hand-painted on the trianglular structure under the mainmast s/light platform,facing aft.
As far as I can tell the pre-war ship didn`t carry the pair of boats and davits,alongside the 4" B/D deckhouse,at least that one job I won`t have to do!The Armament is next on the agenda,I always start with the smallest guns first,the 0.5" MG`s have already been fitted

The Pom-Poms that come with the kit,are very similar to those in Trumpy`s Hood kit.I think they are some of the best 8 barrelled Pom-Poms around,they ,however, benefit from the addition of extra PE ,this time from WEM`s product.These are now in place .
I`ve decided to use the 4" B/D turrets from the ISW QE kit,but I have modified the shape of them,and added an extractor fan on the rear of the turret,and the twin 4" gun barrels came from those left over from my Hood build,as I built her with 5.5" guns.
The sprues are beginning to empty now ,hopefully the model will be finished soon(Hope I`m not tempting fate!)
