1/700 HMS Mary Rose (1915) British destroyer - Done

Post by moomoon »

Hello all,

My (well, one of my) work in progress is HMS Mary Rose.
She was an M Class Royal Navy destroyer (more or less 1000 tons)
I already tried to built one in the past but when I saw this one http://www.finewaterline.com/pages/gall ... ryrose.htm , I picked a hull I had cut in wood 2 years ago and started a new one.
An old attempt on HMS Matchless

Another method: harder to cut the seats but only two parts to make the boat.

Thank you Sir,
I have an Edgard March plan (side and top view) published in French magazine "Marines & Forces Navales. Together with your model pictures I should have enough (even more than I'll be able to accomplish).
Don't you think it should have had a pennant number painted on hull? Found no info about these numbers after K Class (preceding L and M Classes).

Very sharp! I have the HP kit of the ship, but she's been put on hold after loosing the gunshields and not yet having figured out how to scratchbuild them. I'll await your solution!

Btw, what sort of black magic did you use to have the cat keep her paw steady for the shot? Cool little critter, what's her (his) name?

Just been loking more closely!...

VERY good methodology for the ships boats!!!

Cats and modelmakers-there must be a connection...

Indeed there must be a connection, as I am owned by two of the critters myself. Your model is yet another example of exquisite scratchbuilding in a small scale. And the more fragile parts you add, the more the cat approves... :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

For sure cats love ship models...yet I'm not sure the latter share the same feeling about cats :heh:

Hello,

A small update, it's taking shape now  Still many little things to add and multiple occasions to fail, but right now I'm happy with it. For rigging I hesitate between fishing line or electric wire (streched sprue is too fragile for me  )

Very impressive. Don't worry about the railing being too thick, even 1:700 PE railings are officially too thick. The fact that you build your own just gives you extra points.

Thank you Michel, anyway I don't mind really, this is not bound for the museum!

I've started the rigging. I've made a try with human hair. I found these in the rest room of the factory I'm working in  . Only after I started to glue some I noticed they were not black, but dark reddish brown... stupid me. Anyway I'll let then in place but next monday I shall scalp a long dark haired woman :heh:

The hull was drilled from deck to bottom at the beginning of the built. I first glue one end of the hair, let it dry (quick with CA glue), then go round the mast, throught the hull again, fix a weight to tighten it and then apply liquid CA with an electric wire into the hole.

Be advised that human hair tends to stretch and shrink with changes in humidity and temperature. Also, on a related note.... I hope you washed it bloody well!

Personally, I've given up rigging in 1:700 (after several failures).

argh bad news! I previously tried with fishing line but it streched (corrected for now on after heating it hight over a candel... but that's quite dangerous...)
Do you know the magic material that won't move? electric wire maybe???

Excellent! :thumbs_up_1:

As for the rigging: electrical wire is an option, I (before giving up alltogether) used very fine wires from a USB keyboard cable. Others use something called monofilament (available online , WEM for instance) or stretched sprue. Jim Baumann is the master at that, he has some articles on it on this site.

Monofilament wire can be found at your local fishery supply shop. I use Dai Riki fly tying wire. I use it in places where I can put some tension on it as it is not brittle like stretched sprue. My gallery entries were rigged with a combination of Dai Riki and stretched sprue. The key to using Dai Riki is to find as spot on the hull which can function as an anchor point. You drill a small (.2 or .3mm) hole about 2mm into the hull, put a small drop of CA glue in it with one end of your line and let it dry for a few ours. CA dries in two phases and your rigging may need the extra strength. My usual trick is to start a string just before I leave for work and work on it again when I return. After this you line can be run around a number of points in your rig which are secured with small drops of CA. Finding an efficient routing for this can be fun I think, but maybe that's the part time sysadmin speaking... -:) . The last point is preferably also on the hull and secured in a hole with CA or simply tied around a mast - one can tie knots in monofilament (unlike stretched sprue!). Monofilament is slightly flexible and hence capable of taking temperature differences.

Thank you for these advices.
The model is now complete here is a quick I did shot before light fell.
Weathering may look heavy but it was even heavier on some pics of HMS Rob Roy or HMS Skate I've seen on the web (these two ship were of the following R-Class).
I applied brown 1st, then a thinned black juice followed by more black dry brushed.

Will post a few more pics later.
