Calling all SMS Emden & SMS Dresden fans

An additional wartime question. The Emden's shield at her bow, was that removed or painted over so that the outline would still appear, when in her wartime garb?

As far as the linoleum color goes, the painting instructions for the ICM Konigs have many of the horizontal surfaces on the bridge and the aft superstructure painted a dark red, with the vertical surfaces painted in the gray color scheme. I don�t know how reliable this inference is, but I am planning to paint the decking of my Dresden the same color with the gray scheme.

It also looks like some of you guys have also been looking to improve on the guns that come with the Emden/Dresden kit. I have been looking for a good pic of a 4.1� gun for scratchbuilding purposes. One of the Emden�s guns is apparently part of a monument in Sydney. I managed to stumble across a picture of it on wikipedia of all places. Kind of junior varsity research, but if anyone else may find it useful, here is the link:

Emden is one of the kits I am acquiring the bits and pieces for to make a start on it later. I have ordered the wooden deck and the PE - still waiting for them to arrive.

Still in the research stage for now - and I haven't built a model for about 25 years so I'm still building up the courage to get this one right.

Here is a side shot of the Emden gun on the memorial in Sydney. The memorial lists the wounded, killed, decorated and the officers of Sydney on that day. I also collect war medals and have the medals of one of the officers on board.

There is also a shielded deck gun from her in the AWM in Canberra but the only pics I have been able to find are from the front - not very helpful. They actually have a Sydney and an Emden shielded gun on display in one of their halls and facing each other.

I will see if I can find a link for it.

Does anyone have a proper diagram of the rigging for Emden?

Note that the breech protrudes beyond the back of the shield.

The other gun in the background is also from Emden and the shell is a Sydney one.

Finally (for now!) a model from the Australian War Memorial.

This was made by a crew member of Emden in 1916 while he was a POW. The rigging is claimed to be accurate.

I notice, too, that the underside is grey and not red.

Hi Guys,

a solution for the guns. You can order additional parts from Revell, 2 of them are already included as the casemate guns. BMK offers brass barrels ( don�t know if official, but simply ask Burghardt Masch ) you can add these and add a few handwheels. The stupid gun house from Revell you can easily transform to a shield, or use it as a master to build a shield from paper. The result, a quite nice gun for Emden.

When you say you can order additional parts from Revell, do you mean that these are the proper, shielded guns or just additional ones of the same variety that appear in the kit?

I do agree, however, that to modify the existing shields is not a terribly difficult thing, at least.

I take it you have already built this one?

I have been requested to add my pictures of the Emden gun that is on display at the Australian War Memorial Museum in Canberra.
There is a great display with the German gun facing one of the original guns from HMAS Sydney, plus a few other items from both ships.

Unfortunately my little camera struggled in the dim lighting, so you will have to forgive the quality of the pictures.

The model is not on public display, but was seen in the Treloar Technology Centre, which houses the Australian War Memorial's restoration and storage sections.

Thanks for the pics.

The ship's bell actually has an interesting story of its own having once been on display in, I think, Sydney where it was stolen by a German and buried somewhere. He eventually came clean about it and the AWM ended up with it where it was thought it might be safer.

I'm glad you told me it was 1/50 at the start of your post - I'd be very depressed if that sort of detail had appeared on a 1/350.

Seems to be more rigging than on a sailing boat!!

Might just stick with the main bits.
