Some thoughts on the next scratch project ?

Post by Dave Wooley »

As Kiev may well be completed towards the end of this year, I hope?
Ive been giving some thoughts as to the next project and I must admit
I would like to build one of the Kirovs .Peter Velikiy seems to be the obvious
one as it remains in service. Basic research , planning etc should now be
underway for a start early next year?
Ive included a couple of shots of the Peter Velikiy and some photos of
a superb large scale model of one of the Kirovs { my appologies for not including the
name of the builder} .Perhaps because of this model I am inspired to consider
this as a possible next project, we shall see?

A friend of mine built this 1:144 scale model of Frunze some years ago .

While I would love to see you tackle this project, have you visited the Kirov class fans thread recently? Quite a lot of conundrum regarding underwater details, though I don't think that's ever stopped you ;)

Ah the Rurik , one day Mr Scouse , one day :heh: Peter Velikiy is such a stiking ship the more I look at it the more I'd like to built it, say 1:144 over 2m long . Plenty of research to do and I wouldn't be in a position to think about construction untill next spring  .

Hi Timmy The problem is some of the underwater detail on that type of ship will remain a conundrum . If it's on the ship and you can see it put it on the model .

Being the crazy man that I am, I would go one step further, and say if you're going to do the Big Pete, why not go for broke and do her in full fit? You'll already be doing the eight aft Kinzhal launchers and the aft Cross Swords radar, why not add the forward sets as well?

Did your buddy ever finish his Frunze? I see the AK-630's and some other fittings are missing in the images, which prompts my question.

Well spoted. No the model was never completed. I never got to know what happened to the model. The photo was taken in 1989. I need to do a little more research into the Peter V that will mean more photos than I have but I quite enjoy that side of model making. Thanks for the suggestion .

Pity, Dave - you should get in touch with your buddy and see where it went - if she's still kicking around, you could cut your teeth finishing up the work, it'd also give you some work to going over a few pieces of the equipment for when you get into doing the Big Pete.

I am also in fond of Ryuriks not depending on which of the two you were thinking (Ryurik of Russo-Japanese war or Ryurik of VVWI which is very popular among Russian modellers).

But if you decide to build Peter the Great you shall look this thread http://forums.airbase.ru/2008/02/t60201 ... ALINI.html

I would recommend you to register to see pics in large format - if you need help with registration write me a PM.

That thread has really tons of photos of Peter obviously done by seaman on board for making models :cool_2: . And some wonderful models including the one you posted here (sorry if you know about that thread already).

Hi Yevgeniy Apart from some deck fittings , turrets , funnels this is as far as
Rurik has progressed before changing tack. I am not familiar with the site you
mentioned and thank you for your offer of help .

How is this for crazy. A friend of mine Richard Myoka built these two models a few years back which has been one of my inspirations whilst building Kiev . Although they have been featured on the site before I thought, on the off chance that you may have missed them Ill show them again . When it comes to inspiring it doesnt get better than this. In fact you can be forgiven into thinking that you were viewing both a real Sevremenniy and Udaloy, takes your breath away.

Now for the Udaloy . Richard is in a class of his own :nod_2: .

Hmm, I'm of course in favor of the Rurik, or something else, like a Kara or Kresta II maybe. The latter classes would be nice as they can accompany the Kiev (like they did in reality). Velikiy was only active in the 90's, after the Kievs were taken out of service. Also, everybody has a Kirov or Velikiy nowadays, since Trumpeter brought them in. Kresta's or Kara's are extremely rare, yet very heavily armed, two things that are very attractive to me.
As for the underwater arrangement of the Velikiy, what you say is true, one can only model what he sees or can find in any pictures. Nobody can prove you wrong unless he has some real evidence to back it up and you can still adapt that later if you really want to. The research in the Calling All Kirov fans topic is pretty thorough, with a lot of reference material, if nothing certain comes out of that, then I doubt anybody can prove any arrangement wrong or right!

What you say is true but you seldom see a large scale Kirov model and to be fair they do look superb on the water. As an example take the Bismarck , there are many such models even parts for a kit you can buy monthly in high street news agents. Yet modelers like Kiwi medic still rise to the challenge and go one better in the research and construction.Over the years the information on Bismarck has mushroomed allowing more acurate models to be produced. Equally this could apply to the Kirov or Velikiy or any Soviet or Russian warship past or present . There is no doubt that this sort of feed back helps to focus ideas and I'm grateful for that but I would like to have some firm idea in place for when the Kiev is completed.

In that case.... My archive is open to you, as it has always been. I'll send you some extremely nice drawings, a series of Velikiy cuts. Sean has already received them in the past. I'm sure they will be helpful for you. :heh: Too bad for the Kara though, I would have loved to see one from your hand, the least I could do was try ! :cool_1:

I didn't see his Sovremenny, I will confess, but yes - I DID see his Udaloy II - Sheer awesomesauce, drizzled on an awesomesauce-filled cake baked with pure uncut awesome in it.

I have to second Neptune - a Kresta would look equally cool, perhaps a later thought.

Kirovs are just very spectacular. I Do love the presentation of them.

Dave,

As much as it goes against the grain I unfortunately have to agree with SG, finish the 'Rurick'. No fiddly intricate radar to do and think of the saving on your eyesight, not mention sanity. You've got the hull done and if you ain't too sure of what the Port side looks like why not buy a card model to refer too? Makes sense to me. Think about it
