Ancient Sailing Ship [Scratchbuild] WIP

Post by Vahmp »

Hi all,

Not sure this ship model qualifies for this forum, if not feel free to move it or whatever.
It's not a WWII nor a Modern miliraty ship, just something I concocted from a book I read once.

It's sort of a cross between a Roman, and Greek Trimerre [I think that's the way you spell it].

Anyways, here are pics of her [she's not finished yet, she's a work in progress].

This is the cover of the book [found it on the net, the pareback book I had, is long gone], with a pic of the ship;

These are pics on my scratch model;

Sorry about the quality of some of the pics... Alternate cheap camera.... lol

The hull and most of the ship is made of wood. The hull is made out of a solid piece of pine wood, partly hollowed out. I cut and sanded the outside of the hull to the shape I wanted. Carved the figureheads [eagle heads] out of a wooden stick, I found. The rest of her is made out of whatever I could find laying around. Matchsticks, BBQ sticks, tooth picks, paper and cardboard.... Made the anchor out of matchsticks and pieces of aluminum sheets, the chains, well.... they're from old jewlery. Midway thru it, I decided to change the color [it was green, but I opted for a mahogany color]

Comments are welcomed.
Laterz....

I think that all ancient ships are ancestor to contemporary warships, so we have its importance.
Nice art you've made, and I have the impression that these are gothic pieces co's they resemble gargoiles.
Congratulations on nice and original job.

Thanks for commenting Jimmy...

Gothic art? No not at all... Art, maybe. :cool_1:
Gargoyle? hahahaha Nope definately not, I don't think they used fugures of gargoyles back in ancient Rome or Greece. :heh:

Some of the old ships from ancient Rome and Greece, used figure heads of one kind or another.

The one at the bottom of the ship, were called Rams.
The oarsmen would row as fast as they could to gain speed, the helmsman would then steer the ship into the side of an enemy ship. The Ram in front of the ship would them break into the side of the enemy ship [just under the waterline], there by damaging the enemy ship enough to put it out of commision or sink it.
The ship would either be rowed back away from the enemyship, or a boarding party would board her and fight hand to hand.

Well.... back to the birosca, that is giving me a BIG headache.

[Edited] Oh.... And BTW; This ship was my first scratchbuild of water vessels.

Even warships of "counter-earth" that are without any known descendants? :wave_1: :wave_1:

And how about them Goran slave girls that would be the main draw?

Thanks Bob,

AH..... that's the way you spell it. hehehe thanks again.
And yes, it'll have three banks of oars on both sides. Although, it still beats me how I'm going to make the oars, as of right now, I have 2 choices.... Either, make them out of wood, or use the easy way out. There are some plastic coffee stirs, that are already in the shape and scale I need, but one side of the handle is flat and the other rounded.

Thanks again Bob

Hi Chuck,

You seen to know much, have you read them?
Hm. If I didn't know better? Never mind.... (not the place......)

Anyways, alls I'll say is...

I wish you well....

For the oars, you could beat a lot in copper wire, and you'll have the flat surface in the very end of the oar....what about?

Maybe result like this:

maybe, but I would like it to look a bit more realistic than a copper wire does.
But with time I will get it right (I am in no rush to finish this ship. It's a WIP, sometimes I work on it, sometimes I don't. heheheh).

Beside.... I already have to re-do some of the riggings, my cat decided to sleep on the ship. IXXI

Hi Vamhp, how you doing?
Im ok, my computer went down, broke into two pieces, heheheheh.

I meant RIGID WIRE so I think it could look realistic, and copper becomes flat if you beat it.....

You an artist of Hollywood if living in a Gothic home, heheheh, and a nice place with some ships to "colour" the room.
Hope you can have fun with this build, and if you need any help, Ill try to be a good friend. :woo_hoo:

Give some "red bull" to your cat, so ele no vai mais dormir, muito menos encima do seu navio..... :heh: :heh:

Yes.... I know what you ment, (fiu eletrico maciso), Quando retornar a meixer nele, talvez vou usar aquele meixedores (so feitos de plasticos) de cafe, e paresem ser o tamanho certo. The coffee strs already look like oars. heheh

I'm not exactcly sure(I did it by eye. Tudo feito a olho, sem medidas.), but I did put a 20mm figure of a man on the ship, and it fit well with the scale (given the fact, that an avarege man is about 6 feet/1mt78 tall).
So I think the scale is around 18 or 20 milimeters.
Each oar is supost to be manned by 3 men.
