Post-war USN Paint colors

I'm buildinga Gering class DD in post WW II colors. What gray were the vertical surfaces and decks.

P.S. I would appreciate a quick answer as I'm to begin the painting stage.

Thank you Tracy. Could you be more specific. Which Haze Gray 5-H ? Is it possible for you guide me on who manufactures these paints. I have 5-H from White Ensign, but this is a WWII color. Would it be the same.

Modern Haze Gray and Deck Gray are made by Model Master paints in Neutral Gray and Gunship Gray respectively with FS numbers matching.

WWII 5-H Haze Gray was a "blue gray" Modern Haze Gray is 50% Neutral Gray and when viewed in certain lighting conditions appears to contain some "green".

I have always been using Model Master Acrylic Neutral Gray and Gunship Gray for the hull and decks, respectively, on my post war 1/700 ships, but I didn't realize I was being so, accurate. It just looked right, to me.

For my WWII USS Oyster Bay AGP-6 I have chosen MM Acrylic Dark Gull Gray. It is just a tad darker than the Neutral Gray. I am still using Gunship Gray for the deck, but with a rusty weathered look using MM Acrylic Leather in a wash.

USN colors Post war:

Haze Gray FS36270 for vertical surfaces
Deck Gray FS36118 for horizontal surfaces

I make my avation surfaces just a little darker with two drops of black mixed in on my mixing tray.

On 1/700 scale kits I coat them with gloss coat after the paint is dry, apply decals, and then airbrush a thin coat of dullcoat over the model until it has a dull luster. Gloss coat gives the kit a nice finish and the thin coat of dullcoat diminishes the luster.

They were probably still using the 1945 neutral paints in measure 13. Very close, but I don't think exactly the same.

Does anyone happen to know why Testors/MM insists on renaming paint colors? Why in the world couldn't they call FS 36270 Haze Grey rather than Neutral Grey? Same thing for the Deck. Why do they have to call it Gunship Grey?

Because it was used on AC-130 gunships.

*WE* assign names to things that have only designations. Paint companies aren't required to match any thing and can name things however they want. I wish they wouldn't, but we have to keep in mind that the VAST majority of people don't truly care about color; they just want to buy the correct bottle and not worry about it.
