Main Turrets
I could not find any comments on this topic looking through the posts, but what is the reason for the protrusion on the back of the main turrets on the starboard side on the 1/350th Trumpeter North Carolina kit?

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
Does anybody have any alternative photos than those posted on navsource of the North Carolina in 1946 painted in the modified MS22 camo? I know the deck was not painted deck blue, but I"m looking for some more photographs, or one good aerial overhead.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
I'm currently refitting / rebuilding a 1/350 NC that I was working on, replanking the decks with real wood. I was wondering, besides the superstructure having one less platform, what changes would be necessary to represent this 1946 Washington ? I'm assuming most of the splinter shields and gun tubs would have been removed by this point, especially those forward of the breakwater. Covering the holes on the deck of the Trumpeter NC kit shouldn't be a problem since I'm replanking and I know the radar's are different. Are there any known overhead views or plans of the Washington in 1946?
Here is a photo of the Washington in the time period I was thinking of displaying her.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
I am going to do a 350 Trumpeter North Carolina. I wanted to display it as it is today, but after finding a good representation of the anchor chain I decided to put her in Puget Sound. I am still waiting for the PE sheets, so I am pretty much on hold. I did build one of the Kingfishers. I wanted to display it landing. I changed the light over my table with a spiral fluorescent light, and had a revelation. I took the plastic bulb case, and punched out a circle with my trusty paper punch. It was a clean cut, and absolutely a perfect size!

This is just set on my water from my USS Spruance just so I can get an idea of what it will look like.
I still have some touch up work, but so far I am happy. I used a blue fine Sharpy marker for the glass. I am very happy with how that came out.
I have to say thanks to everyone on the forum for all the ideas and help with technique. I don't have the skill levels as most here, but I'm sure having fun.
If anyone has a picture of how the motor whale boats were tied to the ship at anchor I would love to see them.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
Thanks to Russ I completely understand what I was looking at! It's going to happen.
Now the only problem I have is telling the wife I'm going to have to purchase another sheet of PE so I have the landing steps.
Does anyone know where I can get more 1/350 motor whale boats. I only have the two, and I would like to add a few more like the above picture shows. I've been scouring the web, and just can't seem to find them.
Thanks to everyone on the forum the ship is coming out better than I ever could have imagined.

If you're looking for 26' whaleboats, try L'Arsenal or PaperLab. If you opt for the L'Arsenal set, you can also order from Tony Bunch of L'Arsenal USA.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
There has been some discussion over on SN about a photo taken in September 1945 of an unusual AA mount located on the port side of the Washington. Can anyone shed any light on whether this is a quad 20mm or possibly a single or twin 40mm or just an unusual splinter shield with a single/twin 20mm behind it? Oher options also exist but are almost too numerous to mention.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
Since I'm the one who raised the question on SN, let me elaborate.
In Warship Pictoral #29: North Carolina Class Battleships there is, on page 43, an elargement of the picture shown on page 66 of Washington on a shakedown cruise in September 1945. The photo shows the port side of the ship and, just aft of the quad 40mm mount along side Turret #2, there is a splinter shield for a series of three 20mm guns. In the middle of this shield is a noticeable low cut-out. The first 20mm mount is clearly a single as is the third. The middle one is the question. The barrels are lower than the singles and the mount seems to be decidedly wider, but it is under a dark tarp and there is what appears to be a sailor stading in front of the foreward side gun shield (if indeed there IS a gun shield there). I have been informed by someone who's knowledge of this ship I place very great confidence in that there is a photo of Washington showing a gun mount under a tarp that is the right size and shape for a Mk 15 Thunderbolt - AKA a quad 20mm. Can anybody else shed some light on this?

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
OK, I need some help!!!
I just spent the last three hours building one of the ship's catapults. I finished with less than a thread of nerves left, but it looks good and I wanted to see how it is going to look on the ship.
The GMM says it replaces all three parts of the catapult, but if I don't use the plastic base G9 I have interference with the aft Ballards. (Ballards? I'm not sure if that's even the correct name for them) So before I mess anything else with this build I'm asking what everyone else did.
Thanks for the help, and sorry for being a pain.

Re: Calling all USS North Carolina & Washington fans
You gotta pick a date! BEFORE the FORMAL surrender everyone had Deck Blue 20-B on their decks. MOST ships holy stoned their decks on the way HOME after the signing of the surrender documents. That's why you'll see some with natural wooden decks. Just have to check the dates of the photos.
All of that may not be true for EVERY ship but should hold true for 99.9% of the major combatants.

Mostly Washington, but I'm not sure about all of them. The top one for sure as she lacks the extra platform aft of the director that North Carolina received.falcon04 wrote:Life Magazine pics - North Carolina ??
