Re: Calling all USS Barnegat class Seaplane Tender Fans
Great work on your models of the Barnegat class and her near sisters, Carl. I've been a fan of the Barnegats since I first saw one in the background of a cruiser photo taken at Mare Island, then met a guy who served in USS Half Moon (AVP-26). After scanning through your thread, I wondered, do you have a scan of the inboard profile of an AGP that you could post? I'm trying to figure out why AVP's have a step behind the pilot house, but AGP's apparently do not. Was the pilot house on AGP's lowered, or were the compartments aft of the pilot house raised? I've been fiddling around with several variants for several years now and I'd like to get them finished. Thanks.
Mike @ CAP
P.S. I'm glad you liked the 5' gun houses. Sorry about the barrels.

I pondered your "p.s." from your post, and then I got it. I am so, glad to hear from you. I've only heard of you and that you haven't been heard from, for a while. I'm new to this hobby......got back into modeling in Nov 2007.
No apologies necessary on the turrets and barrels. They are the best out there, I've heard.
I certainly can help you out with drawings of AGP vs. AVP pilot houses, and a lot more. I'll IM you, soon.

Re: Calling all USS Barnegat class Seaplane Tender Fans
Here is a brand-new model by Richard Sliwka!! I'm sure that many of us are big fans of his! I particular like this one! I LOVE THESE LITTLE SHIPS!
Richard made this ISW USS Mackinac Kit for a relative of his wife's. Its a beauty! I had to see it, in person, before it headed off to New Jersey, forever.
Richard has converted the kit into the USS Barnegat AVP-10, first of the class of these small seaplane tenders. Here she is in her early 1942 configuration.
Gallery photos will soon follow. More photos can be seen at:

Re: Calling all USS Barnegat class Seaplane Tender Fans
Richard Sliwka's wonderful USS Barnegat has provoked a new motivation in me to get back at my own Barnegat work-in-progress; the USCGC Bering Strait.
I had left off at the application of the special boat davits, small boats, and addition of some midship details. This step was a milestone from which the rest of the railings, rigging, and other finishing touches will follow.

Thanks Heiko!
Thanks Nektarios!
It feels really good to be back in the mood for modeling!
Last night and today, I've been working on the Stack and Foremast Stays and Shrouds.
Just the halyards, whip and wire antennas, flag and jack staffs, and flags are left!

Re: Calling all USS Barnegat class Seaplane Tender Fans
Experimenting with weathering. Since this will be in a diorama of a service vessel servicing PT Boats, I'm going for a more realistic and weathered look than my previous models.
After arguing with myself about the hull and bulkhead color, I have gone with Model Master Acrylic Dark Gull Gray. I am using Model Master Acrylic Gunship Gray on the decks and with a wash of Model Master Acrylic Leather brown to simulate chipped and rusted decks.
Those are rigged hose stowage racks that I have placed and painted on the aft O2 deck.
I found a drawing for gas cylinder bottle colors in the plans for AVPs and AGPs that I have and I have painted some of them accordingly.

Re: Calling all USS Barnegat class Seaplane Tender Fans
Well, all of Carl's updates on his projects gave me a little incentive to do some more work on my Cook Inlet. I'm torn between between detailing and painting; so I'm doing a little of both.
The ship will be depicted in a Ms. 33 paint and I started at the bow as this is the easier part of the scheme.

On the detail side; I have added the 20mm and sky lookouts aft, and started detailing the crane, and lately a kerosene tank that was located on the aft end of the main deck house. Also, the deck edge on the 01 level had a unique double rounded feature that I found to be intriguing; so I went after it, I'll leave it for you to decide how well I pulled it off.

Hope you enjoy; there will be more to come, hopefully sooner rather than later,
Good modeling all,
Bruce
