I came across this in a string of posts the scale modeling forum on Airbase.ru. If you dig, you can find a thread titled "the steering devices of [pr].956" (as translated by babelfish). The thread has this and several similar photos as well as two diagrams that seem to show some sort of retractible thruster fitted not only to the stern, but also to the bow behind the bow bulge. Does anyone know if these are standard on the Sovremennys (maybe just the later batch vessels), if it was installed on a specific vessel only, or if I am interpretting this wrong?

On a similar note...does anyone have full access to the images on airbase? I have tried to set up an account, but do not seem to be receiving the activation e-mail. I cannot get access to the full resolution images on the site, and I found several threads that had my mouth watering. If there is someone out there that knows how to get to the images on airbase, could you drop me a note and give me a hand. Or is there someone that can get the airbase images that might be kind enough to post them here?

In another thread which also asks about the Sovremenny's thrusters (at least, that's what Google translates it to), there is the following drawing mentioned, which seems to be what the thruster should look like:

The plate for the stern thruster is circular - that's a start, at least

The thruster drawing was used to demonstrate the thruster itself rather than its presence on Sovremennys. It is for something called P-159M, but I'm not sure whether that refers to the vessel the drawing is for or the thruster's designation.

The b/w drydock photo is wearing pennant number 441. If I have my pennant numbers correct, the only pr.956 that used 441 is the Sovremenny itself - the first ship of the class - which would probably indicate that the thrusters have been a class feature from the beginning.
Great, somthing else I have to add to my Nastoychivvy model. Of course, I can just scribe some lines and say the mechanisms are retracted.
On a similar note, does anyone have a good photo of the stabilizer fins on an actual Sovrememny class vessel? None of the drawings that I have show much detail, and they just show a simple blade design. However, I've seen some photos of stabilizers on other Russian vessels that are actually constructed like a wing with trailing edge flaps. I'd like to see a photo or two to make sure I've got this right.

Based on this, I think you can safely use the previously posted two-view drawing to make a nice facsimile of the thruster.

I've heard quite a bit from fellow modelers here in Australia about the Sovremennyy class having a bow thruster but what you have here I never knew about this and the info really shows your on the right track. Buy wait your info shows a stern thruster, is there also a bow thruster and what type is it if there is one? Is it one similar to what is shown here like a drop down or something like straight through the hull? Any pictures of drawings to show more info would be great.
One other question is it only on the Sovremennyy class or is it also on the Udaloy class or other warships in the Russian navy?

Unfortunately, the rest of that inboard drawing was not posted, so I can't say about further thrusters, asides from the black and white drydock photo up above with the drop-down behind the bulb.

Yes, I'm interpreting that curved portion as the shroud - I don't think it can really be anything foreign to the ship, since there doesn't appear to be anything under it to support it. Given its position and the narrowness of the hull at that point, I'd say it rests on the centerline and drops down.

I have Trumpeter's 1/350 Kirov in my dockyard and I intend to add as much detail as I can according to my limited experience and even more limited detailed photos of the ship that I have. Right now I'm in the proccess of building the hull and deck and I was wondering if anyone has a photo showing the interior detail of the two doors of helicopter elevator on the stern deck. The elevator has enough detail but the 2 doors are completely devoid of any detail. Thanks.

New findings on Udaloy class,

For anyone interested, the crane on the Udaloy is the same crane as used on the Kirovs on both sides with their lifeboats. This gives better reference material for the crane than any Udaloy pics as there the crane is often overlooked and of course partly hidden between the funnels.
Another finding, some early units have the small mooring platform near the bridge more aft and one level lower than the bridge. In newer units, including Admiral Levchenko and the Udaloy II Chabanenko (along with some other units) have that same platform (which can be hinged up) on the same level and more forward towards the bridge.
Also, some units have the aft open lifeboat placed transverse, others have it placed longitudinal. There are also differences in the antenna outfit on that crane\lifeboat deck, some units have a large antenna on both sides, on others those antennas have made place for some extra storage lockers/boxes. Not sure which unit has which or whether there is a relation with the age of the ships, for now I'd say the older ships have the antennae, newer units have the boxes/lockers.
