Finally got your information : VFA-125 Hornets (A & Ds) from NAS Lemoore TAILCODE NJ Modexes from 501 to 563 (501, 517, 536, 540, 541, 551, 563 (D model) I could identitfy on pics) were used to train both Navy and Marine pilots onboard the USS Enterprise in 1986. NAVY was painted on the right side, MARINES on the left side.

I would guess that they were not "trials" but an FRS (RAG) CQ det. VFA-125 is the West Coast F/A-18 FRS (Fleet Replacement Squadron).

The FRS Squadrons and Training Squadrons ( VT's) will CQ ( Carrier Qualifications) on what ever ship is available to qualify students on carrier landings before sending them to the next step in their training.

Her first deployment with Hornets was in 1996 with CVW-17 after she had been overhauled on the east coast. Sadly, that was also her last deployment with A-6's.

Couple of questions:

Does anyone have a decent photo of the mural on the doors inside the CVN 65 Hangar? I need it for some custom decals and would be willing to post it here for all to use if I can get it.

Also, on the deck markings, did the Enterprise have the Helo spot markings back in the 1980's? I see them on modern photos but don't have any clear deck images of her in the 1980's.

I've seen the PE elevators from GMM but was wondering, what years did the Enterprise start using these? I'm modeling her pre-1990's and all the images I've seen are recent. Can anyone give me the 411 on this? Also, what do you guys who add the deck crew, use to attach them to the deck?

The Enterprise had these perforated elevators from launch. They where removed in pairs during the 90's. Check out the 'Calling all CVN65 fans' thread for specific dates

Which Squadron of C2's serviced the Enterprise back in the late 1980 to early 1990 period? I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row as I try and complete my kit. Early info is getting harder to come by on the net.

VRC-40 handled all East Coast Deployments, And VRC-30 handled all West Coast Deployments.

Prior to 1997 VRC-50 served in CVW-5 in Japan (INDEPENDENCE AND MIDWAY) But was replaced by VRC-30, Det 5.

Hello all,
I hope this is the correct section for this.
Would anyone know if there was ever a 1/350 kit or perhaps a resin replacement of the USS Enterprise with her original island configuration with billboard radar and beehive dome? I used to think Tamiya had made one but cannot find any evidence.
I have seen a Revell 1/400, and the Otaki/Arii which I believe are 1/400 as well.
Any help would be most appreciated!

Mini-Hobby Models did/does offer an early config BigE in 1/350, but I doubt it's very accurate. My MHM expericence has been one of disappointment, as this is a Chinese kit maker using others' molds slightly modified and with much less crisp detail. Noone currently offers a 1/350 BigE backdate set, but it certainly has been pondered.....at least!
I've considered altering Tamiya's island using scratch-build effort. Accuracy would be achieved by studying pics / drawings and getting to know BigE's DANSF timeline. Remember, the island is one of the early config differences.
If you want to build BigE now and don't have any interest in scratch-building, I'd recommend building the Otaki/Arii 1/400 kit. This kit is still rather large at 34", and has very good detail for its' age.
The Aurora/Revell kit is also 1/400 scale and is cheaper to buy, but the Otaki kits is better.

I have the Minihobby 1/350 Enterprise with the Beehive Island and I can confirm what Tony said. It is not a great kit. I will say, it looks like a good start to scratch build the correct island. It is also much cheaper than the Tamiya kit if you don't mind doing the scratch work which you are going to have to do either way. I thought about the 1/400 scale kits, but I wanted to do an old and new Enterprise side by side.

Does anyone have images of the inside Mural they would be willing to share? That's the one piece of art I need to finish my decals off with and I'm coming up completely blank. Surely someone has these on a disk somewhere? I'm desperate! HELP!!!

Hi Guys

Im new to building model ships (mainly do cars and planes), but after seeing some of the amazing jobs people have done on the Tamiya 1/350 "E" I decided to get the kit. Well, thats when I realised I had bought (off ebay) the mini hobbies kit by mistake! After alot of swearing and being annoyed at myself I thought rather than try sell it again I'd just give it a go anyways.. So I was wondering if anyone here has built this kit and if so could answer some questions.. Any help would be much appreciated.

Will the PE parts for the Tamiya kit fit on the Mini Hobby kit? I dont want to spend the money on the parts if they'll be no use

What are the main differences between the kits? Is the MH one just a cheap mold of the tamiya or is there actual differences? Also, if anyone has a scanned copy of the tamiya manual that would be a great help.

Happy New Year! Just started working on the airwing details for the CVN65. Its been a long time since I worked with PE brass and am losing my eyesight working with the small pieces. Can anyone give me some pointers on using the superglue and not having to use big globs to attach the items? Any special tools?
