I took the night off working on the Yorktown to spend some time working the Balao.

The USS Balao SS-285 is officially started. The Balao will be painted MS32/3s

The Balao is credited with ten war time patrols, nine Battle Stars and six ships sunk during WWII.

Kym, you just spent more time on the funnel than I'm going the spend on my whole build. It looks good as usual. I'm looking forward to more pictures.

Building the IJN Yubari - I thought I'd share this tip I got from the brilliant Jim Baumann, have a look, but don't take to much notice of the mess (all will be cleaned later) look at the see-through/hard to see-through canvas.

painted off-white, using actual photo's of Yubari I have yet to understand why there was so much canvas used on this ship, windy maybe is the only thing I can think of, between 1927 and 1944 this is very much how she would have appeared.
I am sure everyone knows the story surrounding this ship, so I won't bore you with it.

This mornings work on my Yubari, now under orders to go shopping (Tesco) which will allow the paint/weathering fix and glue time to go off.

I cut the legs off this over-bridge and replaced with PE parts 1927/1944 which would be the same, any photo's showing this bridge as solid, according to my info is pre 1927.
The weathering requiring a tweek here and there, Jim's tip for canvas I must admit looks better off photo (real world) then it does on photo.
The .25 steel wire a pig to bend into shape, should have used my brain and bent this while still attatched rather than cutting it 12mm and then bending it DOH !
The copper painted tubes/cables whatever they're suppose to be running up and along the stack, with weathering don't look that bad, the first rail has also now gone on, and at this moment in time I'm being hurried along fo shopping.

This is my light cruiser Yubari - 3 days into the build and sadly now on hold, I have realised all to slowly that this simply will not do, several problems have now presented themselves that I somewhat foolishly thought I'd be able to bluff my way through.

My mentor Mr. Myogi -AKA- Jim Baumann, has convinced me to consign this to the rubbish bin and order another same model, which I have now done (ordered another model that is) the problems began with the half round plastic strip just under the deck running the whole length of the ship, this was quikly followed by the smallest drill bit I could find 1mm which resulted in portholes being to large and some even on the beer, not really a problem with a bit of filler here and there, then the paint way to thick, sometimes this simply happens, I never bother with paint, I buy, I stir, I use, on some of my models using the very same paint will result in different finishes, why this is, perhaps someone could tell me, I haven't a clue.
Have I got the hump about this ? Of course not, this is a hobby, and a hobby where I want to learn, if I don't get knocked from time to time, I'm on the wrong site.
Rob gave me the tip on blastbags, Jim B gave me tips on glue and canvas, and my mate gave me a tip at Chepstow (race course) a little Brit humour.
Anyway back to the plot so to speak, the above 3 pix are as far as I'll be taking this model, still got time, and if by chance the 2nd model turns out like the first, then Jim's going to get a kick up the bum.

Still not bad for only 3 days work.

Loooks like Alec is on a building spree...

Everybody is doing great...

I got some progress today... Funnels, mast and some rails assembled... The mast is a killer and fits like a glove. Revell has done some great design work and molding...

The good thing in this build is that the Hellenic (Greek) Navy did not paint the decks differently from the bulkheads up till recently, so the paintwork seems easy at first...

Once I finish with the kit parts, I will do some detail work, such as deck fittings, hoses and pipework that is not included in the kit, as well as try some weathering techniques...

The two tape pieces were used in order to get the bridge deck to adapt to the curve of the ship...

This is the 1/700 IJN Suraga Maru from Niko models. I just sprayed it with Mr.Surfacer 1000 to check for any imperfections. Just some light sanding will be needed. Hope to do more building tomorrow. The last pic is to show just how small she is compared to Choun Maru (center) and Shioya av gas tanker. All by Niko also.

No inconvenience man. I'd say those are just right, wouldn't go any bigger though. Tiny photos don't help anyone. I wouldn't worry.

Hello Kym - have seen the 1-350 IJN Yahagi for sale also by Dragon, can't quite remember on what model or year it was suppose to be, however just behind the bridge and forward of the stack is - well errrr um what appears to be a shed, the type of thing what you'd have out in the garden, I can only assume this is for a small boat, but I'm guess, any idea what this might be ?

QUESTION - would this be against the rules - my Yubari according to Jim Baumann and sadly myself could be a whole lot better, and I am writing this in total freedom that my wife has no knowledge of what I have done, ordered another Yubari, (headache pills on stand by) if she ever found out, boy I shudder to think what she would do to me.
I really could use some help here, if this is not exceptable then please let me know.
I wish to begin again and obviously finish by Jan 31st 2010 a new IJN light cruiser Yubari, also may I build another light cruiser ordered today that might not arrive until after Xmas which will be the Yahagi which will also be completed by the end date.
Basicallly 2 light cruisers side by side, neither of which have I got, both on order, Yubari from the U.K and the Yahagi from Hong Kong, look forward to your reply.

Actually Al, I haven't any idea as of yet, I was going to investigate, but forgot. BTW, Dragon do not have a 1:350 Yahagi on the market, you probably read that Dragon USA had the Hasegawa version for sale.

For starters Al, put your foot down and show her who's the boss. I take that it's your hard earned money your spending on a hobby that keeps you out of casino's, strip joints and other places of ill repute. If she complains about your hobby, start visiting those joints, I think she'll get the point.

As for the rules, the way I read it, we have 2 months from the start date to complete a ship. Weather it's 1 or 10, doesn't matter.

Well Kym its a little like this, you were right its USA Dragon selling Hasegawa's Yahagi, I work 3 different shifts, get to play with 25kv and line speed up to 90mph which doesn't phase me at all, its just when the old woman moans and makes so much sense about spending money on plastic toys (her words not mine) that after a while --- well to cut a long and boring story short, there is only me and web sites like this for my hobby, there is no one else that shares my hobby, I am completely on my todd.
Don't get me wrong, while my wife has nothing to do with scale models, stick her onboard a real warship and she's happy, I guess all I have to do now is build a 1 to 1 scale battleship and I'll be okay.
Thank you for the info regarding the build - my project is now closed until the others arrive by post, I'll simply look in from time to time.

I can't believe the amount of time I spent on getting from the last photo to this one. As you can see, there is quite a bit of P/E involved in the top part of the bridge and all of it small and delicate.

Yeah Nick, it's a pleasure to build. Hasegawa sure know how to put together a 1:350 ship package and the Dutch chick that designed the P/E is an absolute master. I might have to go into overdrive as I just received a phone call from a job that I applied for and my medicals next week. Hopefully I'll pass that and then it's goodbye to my 3 years of holidays/ retirement.
