Calling all USS Barnegat-class seaplane tender (AVP) fans

Whenever I'm watching a WWII documentary about the war in the Pacific, I'm always watching for a glimpse of a Barnegat class AVP.

Well, tonight it happened!

The TV show "Battle Stations", on History International channel, about the Corsair fighter plane had a brief shot of a Barnegat class AVP in camo paint scheme tending to a PBM on off the stern. The shot appears among clips of ships of the fleet about 45 minutes into the show.

Well, after a bit of a slump in model building, I was inspired by Kostas' 1/700 USS New Jersey BB-62 and the strakes that he depicted on her hull.

I thought, "If he can do this on a 1/700 model, I should be able to do this on my 1/350 model." And since I plan a whole lot of detail in my USS Oyster Bay diorama, I really should try to add this detail, as well.

After a few unsuccessful attempts using pin stripe tape (super sticky) and a pencil, I've had success with Pactra tape and the same pencil.

I had my heart set on using the pin striped tape because it was exactly the width that I needed to draw a line on top of the tape and one line on the bottom of the tape, thus keeping the lines parallel and only needing to apply the tape once. Well, even after sticking and re-sticking and re-re-sticking the pin stripe tape to a piece of glass to remove some of the adhesive, it still ripped off the paint from the hull, even the primer (Mr. Surfacer) came off. I used strips of the Pactra modeling masking tape; 1/8" and 1/16" getting the 3/16" width that I needed.

Here is my successful results. I was going for just a hint of the precense of the strakes lines and I've added some rusty weathering and I've moved the hull number a little more towards the bow. After having to airbrush the hull color, a couple of times, I need to go back and touch up some parts of the superstructure where I over sprayed (i.e. the fire hose rack) and re-do some of the black washing. The port side is done, now I have to do the starboard side.

You captured the effect very well Carl, I like the rust effects around the plating very much!!!

The look of the strakes is excellent. Looks every bit as good as the ones that I painstakingly glued on and and is certainly a lot easy to do. Another really excellent presentation; this diorama is going to be a winner for sure.

After adding the strake lines and the weathering I am, once again, in a "just sit and look at it" phase. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that does this.

I obtained two more WEM PT-109 kits. I now have four of them. Four to go. I have sanded them down to the waterline on my bench sander. There is one JAG PT-200 that I am using just for staging and arranging and planning the diorama.

I worked on the 40' motor launches, today. Finished their cradles and added an empty cradle atop one of them. AGPs came with two 40' launches and a 26' whale boat. My dio will have the whale boat in the water.

Not yet, Timmy. The boat with the canvas won't have the rudder. I'm assuming that the rudder and coxwain's railing can be dismantled and stowed. I have since put a prop and shaft on this one.

The uncovered boat will bet a rudder, prop, and coxwain's railing along with a couple of staffs and misc. detail and figures in the boat.

The boats aren't affixed, yet, but will tie down beams and cables.

i sure do- carl knows that that is IF i have the time - i dont even have time to look for my superglue right now even its the holidays...

thats why for now just staring at carl's beauties is enough for me...

I think that a lot of members view this thread, but no many care to comment like you do. I'm the same way, I suppose. I may admire a model, if I'm interested in the subject or not, and not comment in the thread.

The 4 AGP versions of the Barnegat class AVPs were in and around the New Guinea campaign and the invasion of the Philippines. DANFS has some histories of them on their website. (USS Oyster Bay, Mobjack, Willoughby, and Watchapreague.

The AVPs served in all theaters of operations, even in the Caribean Sea.

I do follow those threads that I find interesting and very often don't comment. The main reason usually being that I would basically be just repeating myself. Carl's work is constantly excellent and so I just lean back and watch the show

This area of the ship is just about done. I have affixed the fire control tower, the boats, mooring line reels, engine room vent stack and crane stowage rig.

I've added tie down cables to the boats and added some more figures. Two hose reels will go aft of the engine room vent stack, later.







I've also added a stowed accommodation ladder on the port side.
