How to make painted over Baltic stripes

I have a question for those have the Bismarck with painted over Baltic stripes. What is the best way to paint these and still have a faint stripe look bleed through? I was thinking I should lightly dry spray over them, but not sure if that's how others do it.

I would just pick two more shades of grey that are slightly different from the rest of the hull/superstructure and spray that on.

On the 1/700 Tamiya Prinz Eugen I started, I painted the Baltic Stripes on the hull, then over-sprayed the stripes with the hull color, to try and match pictures of the Prinz Eugen returning to Brest.

Overpainting a lighter shade looks the better option than overpainting the stripes.

In the photos it looks as if the stripes have left a ridge in the paint where they have been overpainted - to me that looks too harsh for the scale.

Yeah, I noticed that when I shot the pictures. A little light sanding will hopefully fix that.

On Bismarck wreck photos it appears to me that the painted over stripes look somehow 'fresher' as the rest of the hull, there is no black or something shining through (at least on the photos I have seen online, maybe someone who had seen the wreck with his/her own eyes will prove me wrong ...).
Maybe this 'fresher' look can be achieved by painting the hull, weather it and THEN applying the 'stripes' with the same grey used before.

At least this is what I want to try on my PG ...

i think the easiest way is to paint it like they did with the real ship. paint the ship in the same order. grey, then the stripes and bow dark grey. then paint over them. remembering that when the hull was painted over it was with a thinner mix/less coats of the hull grey.
