So here's the aft deck. This time no trouble with the paint. WHen I opened the can, it looked a lot heavier than the red, so I think the droplet problem was caused by too thin paint. So now the deck was sprayed and the bollards have been painted black with a white top as was the case on Tributs in '92.
I've added the aft plate on the aft superstructure now and also the four disks on both sides forward. I think they are burst disks of some kind or just overpressure vents blowing sideways when something goes wrong with the Kinzhal system. Otherwise the helicopter and other stuff would be in danger. I've seen similar things with the VLS for Sea Sparrow on the M-class.
Now I'll be continuing with that aft superstructure. The batlle plan goes like this. I'll make some adaptations, as the Levchenko aft part, which I built, is quite different from the Tributs aft part. Then I'll spray it grey, after that I'll add the dark red bottom line of 1.5mm and then I'll glue it in place. I'm lucky since the Tributs only had the red bottom line, which is not bordered by a narrow white line as seen on later units in some occasions.

You can also see three of the torpedo tubes which are nearly finished. The rings are glued in place, I'll sand them down a little more.

Hi Dave, unfortunately the rudder access is not permanent. By now the flight deck is already on top. My main access will be more forward, I'll show that later on. And I got your book from my brother, now that's a Christmas gift!! Didn't know there were so many excellent pictures in there, love that colour picture part too!

Gtdeath, I didn't mix any colors, it's Revell Lederbraun (Leather brown) acrylic. It's pretty ok and I can remember using it on my 1/700 Udaloy before too (enamel version then).

And I dressed her up for a Christmass update.

Some work was done on the aft part again. At least I got the battery (lead-acid 6V), yet I'm still lacking one connection and some extra wire.

I finished the portside part of the hangar, added the second layer of decking on top of the helo pad, this was not in the kit, so I made it myself. The helicopter handling system was provided (even twice) in the kit, so I placed that, although I know it's not exactly the correct shape for this system. It looks ok though. I'll paint them grey, afterwards mask them and spray the deck itself green. I also added some hatches which are on the real ship (but not shown or mentioned in the kit), apparently they have some hatches in front of both hangar doors. Not sure what their use is, they're not exactly connected to the hangar doors or anything, so they're not hinging parts to make a good connection with the elevator. I have only one picture with one of these hatches upright, I think they are accesses to storage spaces for the net and fueling hoses... I have sanded these rows of hatches down to a bare minimum thickness.

I also have the red paint, so I've added the dark red stripe on the "stepped part" and put them in place. Pictures will follow later.

So here's the progress of yesterday evening and today.
Green's a little dark, but in some pictures it appears to be this dark after all. Furthermore the grey band around the helo system was offset a little outboard. The tape was too broad and on the outboard side of the system the white lines and circles for landing are marked, so no problem for now. The funnels are done, one was a little below standard, so I made some extra sanding on that. I kind of forgot that when you spray paint you see glue spots a LOT better than when you hand paint. Guess that's another lesson learnt. Brush painting does have its advantages after all!!

No, I airbrushed the flight deck. First two grey stripes, then masked the rails off, added some rails from the hangar to the deck, and aftwards sprayed the green. The hangar is not yet fixed, I've painted that seperately together with the funnels etc. The gratings are indeed part of the PE, that's one thing which is excellent in this kit!

hi roel,great work on your ship,i realy like the vent work on the funnel ,you are right glue spots do stick out when painted,it is very hard not to have some glue spots show up.

Here's another update.
I'm a little stuck on the electronics again, so I'll have to wait (hopefully I can test it before I leave again).
So I'm continuing with my helo hangar. With my old pictures and some more recent pics I'm installing some more details in the hangar. First I had a false wall between the outer wall and the inside, but after studying the pictures and the options to build this hangar, I decided to remove it.
Now I just attached a lot of framing on the outside (like in reality) and I'm also making all the rest which I can find out on the few pictures available.

Thank you for posting your pictures of helicopter and hanger. They are a great addition and inspiration for me to detail a future udaloy build. Neptunes build is pushing me closer to buying one of these models with each of his posts.

Atom, Do you mean the hull or the anchors. As for the anchor chocks, indeed I will reshape them more later on. As for the hull, I'm not intending to change too much on the hull, I've already had to cut the aft part to pull it together, I've also added stuff to it, but sanding the bow to a more acceptable shape goes a little too far (and takes a lot of time). If I want a good Udaloy hull, I'll have to build it myself... (which I don't intend, although another ship is already on the building board).

Since I'm still stuck, I've continued the hangar, luckily, since I have the feeling that if I had kept this job for last, I'd probably cancel it and make that hangar closed like the other side.

These four pipes are steel wire. I tried to attach them to the framing in the hangar, however pretty difficult to do that. So I made small spacers with small triangular cuts in it to hold the tubes together. This is the result when the tubes are together with the spacers. Afterwards I glued the spacers on the hangar wall.
I noticed I didn't take a picture of the outside wall yet.
The elevator has been painted green too now and one hinging door is also attached. Apart from that some work has been done on the next build, which is progressing well, and is more interesting to me since it's all scratch.
