Re: Dockkeels Bismarck 1:100
Could you please explain a little your method and why you chose this method to build the hull?

Re: Dockkeels Bismarck 1:100
Hi Nikos,
thanks for your reply! I am building a static model of Bismarck, so I go for maximum detail and accuracy. So far all Bismarck hulls I have seen are somewhat simplified in terms to shape. That includs especially the hull bottom with "dockkeels" and their transission into the bilge.
I used the construction frame set of Panzerschiffe F & G as my primary source of information.
The outline of the flat hull bottom was not a streamlined one but rather a succession of rectangles causing the edges and cornes "to hang over" the bilge (see the first 2 photos below).
Bye,
Bernd.

Hi Bernd
I was wondering where you got your information on the dockkeels.
I have checked my lofting drawings and cannot see them fabricated as you have done.
Do you have any photographs of the dock keels?
Any photos I have seen of the keels do not seem to show your construction.
Any information would help!
Regards
Philip

Re: Dockkeels Bismarck 1:100
Hi,
what are lofting drawings, please?
I used the 1:50 frame drawings for Bismarck and Tirpitz as well as fotos of the Tirpitz wreck which had basically the similar hull (expect for a little difference in the bow) to Bismarck.
Which fotos of Bs do you mean?
Talk to you soon,
Bernd.
PS: Gally drawings contains some info in the frame drawings (dashed lines) but not in the water lines, Tirpitz drawings contain more info on this.

Re: Dockkeels Bismarck 1:100
Hi Bernd
The lofting drawings are the drawings that are produced by the designers and naval architects. These are interpreted by the shipyard workers and they turn the drawings into the finished product.
I cannot see the type of Dockkeels you are building in the photos that I have of Tirpitz wreck. You must have some very good photos.
Do you have any photos of the dockkeels on the real Bismarck to show how they looked?
Regards
Philip.

Hi Bernd
Thank you for the explanation. I have the same question with the others. Why did you decide to build your hull with this shape?
Will you be using the parts you have already manufactured for your model?

Hi,
did some fine tuning on the dockkeels and applied a base coat.

The paint reveals much of your attention to this fine and undiscovered detail....
Are there any other parts of the hull that need the same attention to detail? Have you found any other variations to the hull that should be corrected?

Here are some pictures of the Tirpitz being salvaged. You can only see the bilge keels on the one picture.

i am not an expert on german battleships by a long shot ,but i am wondering if the dock keels you are talking about are not drawings as to where to place the shoreing blocks when the ships are in drydocked or were there when built,i have yet to see a picture showing dock keels.

I have this drawing, it contains some info regarding the flat hull bottom (waterline 0). Look for the dashed line running out side of the dockkeels. For building a hull youll need more infos on that issue, I used Mr. Gallys Tirpitz drawings. For more questions please feel free to contact me!
Bye for now,
Bernd.

I dont exactly understand your posting...
First, the dockkeels of Bismarck and Tirpitz were not "visable" because they were flush with the bottom. See the cross-hatched areas in the drawing which Noberto posted above. But the outer edges of these dockkeels hang over the bilge which made it nessasary to shape the bilge accordingly - see the construction frame drawings of Bismarck and Tirpitz and the fotos of Tirpitz when turned over as well my model hull.
HTH,
Bernd.

Bernd:
I may have missed this, but what hull did you start with?
The Faired Lines from the Mold Loft Offsets of Bismarck show what your doing to the bottom of your hull, the tangent points seem a bit differant but unless you have this drawing you would be hard pressed to know exactly how this feature was designed into the hull.
Very good work, I am looking forward to following this project.
