The seaplane tenders that I am making full hull have a curve at the stern and it curves down, as well as inboard. It can trick the eye while trying to tape a straight and level boot topping in that area. That's why I like the waterline models!

You pulled it off, Tracy!
It isn't easy for anybody, I wouldn't think. Especially me, The Newbie.

I usually go from keel up.. I just find it easier to curve the tape in that direction than to do the red, then gray, then boot topping. This one I did the green first and then the anti-fouling... I don't think it would have made much of a difference either way with the chines and hard corners!

Looking at the original scans, I can see no evidence of a hard line that indicates a boot stripe.carr wrote:Is this a black boot stripe or just accumulated grime?
I.E. it looks like accumulated grime.

Are you speaking of "my" 1/350 PT Boat? The bow 37mm is from the JAG PT-200 kit. All of the forward gun pedestals are scratch built with styrene rod. I plan to cover these guns with canvas covers for my diorama.Model Student wrote:very nice detail. is the gun on the bow scratch built?![]()

Re: Calling all PT boat fans!
Does anyone here have any experience with (or even seen) the Gulfstream models 1:96-scale 77' Elco PT boat? I've been asked to build one, and would like to know what I'd be getting into.
Thanks.

Re: Calling all PT boat fans!
Hi Sean,
I was given that kit by a gentleman who no longer wanted it. I'm going to have Alex Johnson build it for me since I can't build myself ...
I'm no builder, but it doesn't look like a bad kit. Someone once told me that it appeared to him that they made the hull by taking the Airfix RAF ASRL and cutting it down. I can't confirm that, but that's what I was told. The upperworks is of the first series of the 77 footers, obviously after they removed the domes from the turrets, so it'd be a breeze to depict one of the 'Expendables' of Bulkeley's Squadron 3.
But, Alex is going to do alot of plastic [resin] surgery to make it into a second series 77 footer, possibly the 66 boat with that crazy scheme she wore in New Guinea.
The one thing which is BAD about the kit are the twin 50s in the turrets, which have NO detail to them at all. Alex says that he'll substitute 1:72 .30 caliber guns and that they'll be an excellent stand-in for the 50s.

Hey, Ed?
Yeah, ... Hi. I clicked on the link you supplied in your posting and I clicked on a few photos, and each time I did, my Norton told me that the photos contained a Trojan embedded in them. I just thought you and others should know that.
By the way, I've always loved your 495 model. It shows true craftmanship Ed.

All,
I just wanted to keep you in the loop about this. My revised PT book is completed and was just burned to a CD/DVD and will be mailed out to Nimble Books, LLC first thing tomorrow.
As I have information on its release and availability, I will post it.

Garth,
Does your new book have any info, history, or photos of PT Boat Tenders like Oyster Bay, Mobjack, Willoughby, or Watchapregue?
My Oyster Bay work-in-progress: Leyte Gulf, Oct 1944 with MTB Ron 33.

If so they probably would have inserted via small inflatable boat. Most of the small raider teams I've read about either inserted via small rubber raiding craft or landing craft at night.

Re: Calling all PT boat fans!
I don't know how accurate the movie "PT-109" is but remember the scene where they go and pick up the Marines? They swing in close to the shore and drop cargo nets over the side and provide cover fire for the Marines to wade/swim out to the boats. Then they run out of gas and start drifting. There's an idea at least regardless of is true or not.
I'd imagine some PT-Boats were used for raiding teams. Seems plausible enough. Don't know any accounts off hand though but unless you're going for a 100% factual diorama I don't see why not. Just my 2 cents. I think it'd look awesome!

PTs did land COASTWATCHERS, native scouts, OSS agents and such. If you would go to www.ptboats.org and click on their message board and do a search for posts made by (or about) Alamo Scouts, you'll find more discussion on this topic.

Re: Announcement update
Hello All.
Today, I have received an early example of the proof from my publisher and I was very pleased by what I've seen. The photos I chose were very, very sharp and some, if not a lot, are in color.
Also, I have included some design drawings of the camouflage measures used on the boats as well. Some of these have color swatches with them and the color swatches can be seen quite well.
I've been told that the first printing run of the book will be as a hardcover version, but all subsequent print runs will be a paperback version, I will assume something akin to what Alan Raven's WARSHIP PERSPECTIVES are in.
I've been told that the hardcover version will be $10.00 more than the price of the paperback version will be, whatever that is. I don't know yet.
From what I saw today people; THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT A SQUADRON "IN ACTION" BOOK! This is for real............. I love this new book people.

Nimble Books just sent me another draft of the proof of my revised PT book, it looks stunning! I'm marvelling over it ........ I cannot believe that I did something like that, it blows me away. 172 pages all told ........ We'll be sitting on it for a week or two, to check for typos and the like ...
We're getting closer! I hope you'll like it guys ... I really put a hell of a lot of work into this one ... I think you'll approve of it. Heck, if it blows me away, it must be good. John Lambert says I can be my own worst critic ...
