Restoring lost deck detail in 1/700th

I'm working on a couple of 1/700 DD's and I'm having a problem: One of the things I want to be able to do is remove cast-on detail (such as K-gun racks or depth charges) and replace with PE.

So, I replace my #11 blade with a chisel and go to town. After some swearing and careful sanding I think I'm ok. But...

I've lost some of the deck detail. I'm not talking about the planking itself, but I'm not sure what they are called: chocks, fairleads? (two posts on a raised plate, used to tie rope I assume). I've thought about scratching replacements, but that's a pretty small details for something with no skill.

How do you handle it? (besides, of course, not losing the detail in the first place )

I see what do you mean about the lost details. It happened too me already. Nevertheless I managed to replace these small tiny parts which you stated are the the places to put the cables on. If you have an old thick railling set of photo etch use it in the following way. You cut one small part of the rail horizontally...you have a square (probably a square depending on the type of rail) with 3 or more rails...then you cut it in half vertically...you have two similar parts with an horizontal rail and 3 pins...you cut one third of the rail horizontally and you have one vertical part with two pins. Invert the position and glue it to the deck then you have your part. If, for any reason, there isn't much undertstanding on this process please tell me and I will try to draw it and put it online!

Thanks! I hadn't thought of using PE rail scraps, and it gave me several ideas to try a bit later on.
Though I'm not 100% sure I can visualize what you're saying I think I've got the idea.

Definitely worth the time to experiment. I'm also planning an order to Pacific Front for a pile of WEM stuff for evaluation (they sell Fairleads, captstans, bollards, etc.).
