I'm following your work with much interest as we're working on the same model

My opinion about the two PE sets is that neither is complete and, if one would like to build a very accurate model, then he would have to purchase both sets, as each one has details that are missing on the other, with very few superpositions. Errors on Nautilus searchlight platform are disappointing, but at least the perforated floor is usable.
Also, for the price I paid for them, BMK 5"/38 turned barrels (Revell's barrels are too short) and L'Arsenal bridge wing equipment are a must-have.

Your view on the photo etched sets is absolutely agree !! Together they make the best set.

OK, so far spectacular !!! I am like a few others here also working on the Fletcher, but have not posted photos yet, I want to be a little further along before I do so. My project will be as generic as you can g et as I've already noticed on critic's comments on the gun director. Fact is the ships changed everything as time went on and as they showed up in port. So keep having fun. Other critic's comments are correct - you need both the Nautilus Set as well as the Eduards set (I just ordered the Eduards Detail Set and the Weapons set) I have been using the Nautilus set and my friends are bowled over by the Searchlight platform irregardless of whether it is 100% or not.

Also using some of the Nautilus resin 5" turrets - they are not cast that well sorry to say- lots of clean up needed.

Now thanks to another comment on this post I just ordered the L'Arsenal Bridge detail set - thank you !!!

Also, since you are showing torpedo tubes (and here I go making a critical comment) you hopefully have torpedos to go with them ? They show and you need them. I ordered 4 sets of White Ensign 1/144 torpedos (right or wrong type) from Squadron and they cost me about $30.00 with shipping for 16 torpedos. Very nice with photo etch and they will be cut to fit as per photos I've seen of the real ships and some well done models.
I ordered so many because i am building not only the American Fletecher - but the German Modern one as well.

Right. I have Nautilus' resin guns but they are bended, twisted, and there is a lot of excess resin to be removed and losing the details is hightly expected. So I use the Revell parts.

So good that my post attracts people to talk. As I said, I learnt a lot here.

Hello Douglas,

Congratulations on your work so far, very nice. I am also building USS Chevalier from the Revell kit, but I don't have any of the aftermarket items. I am curious about the PE hatches shown in your construction photos. What is the small cutout square in the upper centre section of the hatch? I have never seen this before, there is usually a brass "material condition" plaque in this location with an X, Y, or Z label.

Have you guys building the CHEVALIER found a quad 1.1-in mount in 1/144 scale? I have not kept up with the after-market updates for this kit. I see that Nautilus over on Steelnavy has posted images of the test shot Square-Bridge option for this kit.

H&R products has a 1.1 quad listed in 1/144th, but I have not actually seen it. I made an attempt at scratch building one from photos and drawings. Douglas, apologies for intruding on your build with these photos, I hope they can be of some use to you. Sorry for the poor quality photo, I think it may be the lighting conditions:
