According to her TROM from Combined Fleet she was assigned to the Yokosuka area, so her upkeep would have probably been at Yokosuka Naval yard... thus Yokosuka Grey. There may be others who have different information, however.

Ugh... the grey I have never seen. >_< lol

But that's a very logical connection you're making there.

Has anyone ever seen what Yokosuka grey looks like?

Well, White Ensign has it in their paint line, or you can buy the IJN paint chip set from Snyder & Short AKA ShipCamouflage.Com.

Is it still possible to get both Akagi and Kaga in 1/700 scale? and has anyone built the 1/450 version of the Akagi?

Hasegawa's 1/700 Akagi is still around.

You may have a harder time to get Kaga, though - at least - for an affordable price.

Akagi books

I would like some reference material. The only one I know of is the AJ Press book on Akagi. Is there anything else or is that it?

Well, there are very few single volume references on Akagi. There is a second volume from AJ Press (Profile Morskie) just released. THere is also a 3D CG book from Futubasho that is very good but hard to find as its out of print.

Most references are Japanese and part of collections on IJN CVs as a whiole. The best currently available photo reference is the KMM (Kure Maritime Museum) on IJN CVs, published by DIamond-Sha. It is a great photographic reference. I would also reccomment the Kojinsha Mechanism book on IJN CVs (available in softcover) and, also out of print, the Gran Prix Shuppan volume on IJN CVs.

THere are also volumes by Fukui, Maru Special, and the Kojinsha series of histories.

Mahalo Dan... I've been trying to get my library online so that others can search but its slow going. I imagine your library is brimming as well. Been following your post for awhile and they're always very informative. Keep up the great work...

There is a lot of good Akagi Stuff here but Kaga stuff is a bit scarce. About the Kaga..... A lot of modelers have depicted the metal portions of carrier deck as being different shades of grey in different places. Why was this? and what model colors does one suggest using? I'm going to be using Tamiya Kure grey on the hull. I'm currently scratchbuilding the deck from styrene and a lot of modeling greys I've tried have way to much contrast to the kure grey to look good.

I think it's just differences between deck plates.

The above model appears to be a 3-part series that one can order. Each part of the series contains parts to the model along with pictures, notes, history, and instructions. Similar in concept, then, to the Bismarck and Hood sets that were done in Europe some time ago.

Bryan, just so you know, that series is a set of 100 magazine issues, each of which comes with the parts and instructions needed to build one step of the Akagi. Each issue costs 1,390 Yen, which is approximately $15 USD. They have currently only released up to issue 11, and the issues are released every Tuesday. In total, then, the whole vessel will cost you something like 100 x $15 = $1500.

You may wish to get the Hasegawa 1/350 Akagi instead, which costs $300 for the kit itself plus additional costs for the PE parts. Even including the PE parts, it will be "only" around $500.

I just recently acquired the "THREE DECK" AKAGI.My question is NOT one of accuracy but something else. What photoetch set supplies enough parts for this version?? I just want to do an enjoyable build of something different and it will be my second 1/700 ship and I would like her to at least look good. Can anyone put me on the right path here. When I started 1/350 I was given lots of P.E. because the former owner of that stuff went to 1/96 scale!I don,t seem to be able to get any local help. commodore4

WEM is in the process of making a set for that kit, but no other aftermarketers have indicated any plans for it.

Hasegawa themselves also made sets specific for that kit (Set A: http://www.hlj.com/product/HSG3S-49 , Set B: http://www.hlj.com/product/HSG3S-50 , Wooden deck with its own PE parts: http://www.hlj.com/product/HSGQG24 ). Hobby Search has only Set B and the Wooden Deck instock: http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10078831 and http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10073770

Unless you want to wait for the WEM set, you'll probably have to settle for being creative and using generic IJN carrier sets or find a place that has the Hasegawa Set A in stock.
