Calling all USCG Cutters (all types) fans

Thanks for the offer of help! Any detail closeups, particularly of the areas I mentioned, would be useful.

I haven't yet decided which individual ship to build. I'm building the model more or less in standard configuration, without the additional armament and other changes made to the ones operating in the Gulf. It'll have the 25mm on the bow and .50 cal MGs on the bridge wings (the former will be scratchbuilt, the latter adapted from 1/48 aircraft spares)

Note that the text on the hull is missing the "U.S" - I'll add this later along with the hull number and name. The "Coast Guard" text, along with the crest on the stripe, was taken from a USCG aircraft decal sheet.

I selected 5 photos of USCGC Grand Isle (1338) including a front 3/4 water side shot, 3 that show parts of the after deck area (all starboard side) including the crane, with and without the RIB, and a close side profile of the front 25 MM. There is a lot of clutter on the after deck, gang plank and all. They are dated 1991 and 2001. My printer can scan so I will see what happens and will send them to you over the weekend. The tall ships are in this weekend so there are lots of distractions!

I got them scanned and as I'm new this photo software I went with the defaults so they are BMPs about 2 MB to 2.7 MB each. I can email them to you as I know they are over the limit for this site. I'm pleased with the scanning and it didn't leave anything behind. Otherwise I can resave them in some other format (at a lower level resolution & detail) or cut and crop when I learn how to do that.

Is this the same resin model you previously showed?

I cannot even find a plastic model of a Seaplane tender to convert to CG cutter.
I was on the Halfmoon, and well remember rolling around, slow ahead, slow astern, roll, roll, roll, while the scientists were dropping their Nansen bottles and doing their Ocean work---
Glad to get back on routine patrol.

I hadn't seen a response from my comments of July 15 & 17 about the photos of 1338. Just checking to find out if you are still interested and how you would like to receive them. Since that time I have purchased a DSLR and therefore am gaining some experience with the software so I can put the files into a more suitable format, size, etc. Let me know what you would like.

I hadn't seen a response from my comments of July 15 & 17 about the photos of 1338.

Sorry - I sent you a PM on the 18th of July regarding the photos, it's still in my "outbox" so it looks you didn't receive it for some reason.
In the meantime, I've now virtually finished my Island-class model (I found some more photos of the 25mm gun, RHIB and crane on the USCG's own site), the only area remaining, other than a few small details like rigging, is the flying bridge. Lacking any photos or drawings of this area, I'll just have to use guesswork based on photos of other USCG craft and contemporary vessels with a similar bridge design.

I did some cropping to reduce their size but I think the conversion into jpeg reduces the size in any case. I hope this is useful to you but good practice for me in any case as it is the first opportunity I've had to do this and upload to the Internet. Those may present rigging and bridge detail then the others.

Does anyone know where I could get a WW2 Cg cutter model built for me?---at 87 the hands and mind are not steady enough to try a kit job---I was chief engineer of CG83464 at Normandy, 6/6/44----CG43(Invasion # for ease of recognition) was assigned to JunoBeach----we were one of 60 cutters attached to USCG Rescue Flotilla 1 base at Poole, Dorset------I have found outfits that make m82' Viet Nam era models but no WW2 83 footers----thanks

If you could identify the designation (LCM, LCP, LCVP, etc.) that might be a start. There are modelbuilders around who specialize in USCG vessels, though I don't recall any at the moment.

Mr.PINNIGER; That sir, is one fine looking model even at this point. When she,s done I would like to see her again. I converted(for real) a coast guard bouy tender into a not so fast luxury houseboat.She sure got the looks though.Outside, with some dummy equipment she looked every bit ready to do the job she was built for.The lifting capabilities helped me help friends whose boats got swamped or damaged in collissions with fixed objects(read levees) in NOR.CAL over twelve years ago. My special love in model form is the "CAPE" class cutters.I like to think of them as motoryachts with an attitude. commodore4

I found my 'grail'---made contact with Bill Waldorf of Waldorf Productions (believe you folks know of him) and he is going to build me my 83' WPB after he finishes his USS Indiana---seems I 'lucked out' and got one of the premier scratchbuilders to do the job since there are few plans available for that model of a WW2 anti-sub, SAR cutter----excited about thye prospect of having a museum quality model to show off at conventions, etc. and h ope3 then Good Lord spares me to see the end product----cheers and thanks to all

Hey guys, does anyone know of any plans available for the 255' Cutters known as the Owasco-Class? They were classified as WPGs (gunboats) during the war and then became cutters afterwards. I'm looking to scratch build one in their as built WWII scheme and have only found a small handful of small, blurry photos and one side view drawing. Anyone have any info? I got a lead on a 1/96 scale fiberglass hull with superstructure plans from a place called "Coast Guard Models" but all their website is a catalog request feature and nothing else

Are you familiar with the model that I built of the Bering Strait WHEC-382 in 1/350 scale?

I have a few photos of her in her gray paint scheme as well as white, with and without the racing stripe.

As a matter of fact, right now, this minute, I am working on conversion parts for the Bering Strait (some 311' Cutters in general) for the 1/350 scale Iron Shipwrights resin model kit of the USS Mackinac AVP-13.

When I'm finished, it should be much eaiser for other modelers to convert the Iron Shipwrights kit to a 311' Cutter.

What an awesome build! You can definitely count me in for conversion parts/kit! Your build has inspired me to buy this kit from ISW to build alongside my 2 ISW 378 post and pre-fram builds. I'd like to buy their 327 kit and build it in a late 70's or early 80's fit, but I don't think my scratch building skills are up to it!
