Calling all Arleigh Burke-class (DDG-51) fans

Has anybody built anyone of the Trumpeter Burkes ? Are there any mistakes, misplacements?

I've built several (Lassen, Arleigh Burke, Cole, Momsen) and I think they are excellent kits. I cant' say they match EXACTLY their real life counterparts, but they are extremely detailed, well engineered, and feature a waterline option. It is interesting that although all these ships are classified as sisters, the kits have particular differences that really add to their accuracy. Such things as different hull lengths, bridge fronts, and most manufacturers would normally simplify as the same.

Highly recommended.

Does any kit supply NULKA launchers? The platform for the Harpoon launchers between the stacks?

Of Trumpeter Burkes that I"ve bought, the Hopper and the Momsen have the NULKA launchers. I think the Forrest Sherman has them as well, but I am not at home and cannot confirm.

Trumpy`s USS Porter have this platform included in the kit.

Thanks for the info. The Navy has contingency plans to put Harpoons amidships on the Flight IIAs when the tactical situation comes for them. They would be criss-crossed between the stacks as discussed before. One may notice that the sliding pad-eye kingposts are right between the stacks, too. They would be moved a little aft to clear them from the Harpoon blast.

I got my hands on the USS Hopper today. What a fine kit. Something I have noticed is that Trumpeter is rather attentive to the individual changes made between ships and time frames. It's cool.

On the note of the NULKA launchers and stands, the launchers are super easy to make with small rectangular stock. The stand is, in the kit, a rectangular jut-out that bridges the two stacks at the O1(?) level. The piece is totally scratchable.

I am going to use this baby to build the USS John Paul Jones for a former professor of mine at Texas A&M University, Professor James Bradford, a man who happens to be the world's foremost authority on John Paul Jones. I think he would like a model of the ship, and after I get established in Japan, JPJ will be one of the first projects on my list. The Hopper looks like she will be an extremely good candidate for the job.

They are I just did not take a picture from the side.

When you get it glued together you will see what i mean, the side should be angeled out downward, on the model it is vertical. -its easy fix.

I would like to see that photoetchers would make the correct doors for any model they make, there are some special doors on this and other model ships......Please.

Yeah, well you know, anything like that is about as easy as pie. However, we now understand the dimensions needed, and I understand the awesomeness of Trumpeter's models. I now know the differences between most of the kits so I know which one to get in order to represent different ships in different eras.
I am actually really anxious about being able to paint one of these models. I know which paints to get and which to put on where and when. It's going to look pretty good I think.
I am going to be doing a DDH version of the Burke without Aegis with a..."custom" but standard radar suite instead. I have her Harpoon arrangement, new main gun, radar suite, UAV arrangement, hanger and flight deck area and markings, small boat hanger, and CIWS arrangement all set up. Man, what a hot model that will make. Hopefully Cliffy B will actually beat me to construction

Have you seen this? take a look at that picture on navy.mil and see how they have mounted ASMs, as they dont need that replenish gear as US do.

Yeah, it's cool. The KDXIII ships are pretty neat. They have 128 VLS tubes in a very curious arrangement, too. I don�t think the South Koreans need to UNREP nearly as quickly as our ships do. There are little stations in that picture for sliding stuff over on lines during an UNREP. Maybe they just don�t want the big sliding pad-eye if they have the other gear. This is how I have Harpoons arranged the new type of ship (DDH) I described earlier. Unless the Navy decided it needed to be in a serious missile throwing campaign I don't think the Navy would sack-up and put this many missiles on a destroyer. Look at the only ship that got that many. Battleships. That�s right. There is confusion that the Navy put twice as many Harpoons on the battleships as on the cruiser Long Beach or anything else for "defensive measures". In fact that's not true. One of the dictated missions of the battleships was �to coordinate and execute Harpoon missile strikes against enemy groups� and not "use Harpoons in self defense". So, if this were a mission of a DDG or a DDH, they might put 16 on them.

That does not mean we cannot. I have made mention of the Harpoons on a platform between the stacks so many times, because that's the real design and the real plan. The best modifications one can make to a model ship are the ones that are the most believable and closest to the truth. So, the total "WIFs", as people like to call them, are more free to dance the subject, but if one wants to make something believable and not "that's really stupid" one needs to follow the rules of the existing ship. The coolest ones have a defined mission and then equipment that follows that mission

These ships from trumpeteer are very impressiv and very good models., (hope theyll make the Ticos too)

As iam in progress of building USS Hopper and USS Forrest Sherman, ill share what flaws ive found so far.

Hull shape is wrong especial the bow sides.

On Hopper the aft phalanx platform need some work to get the mount on properly and the aft funnel are too much angeled down on top.

On Forrest Sherman Those RHIBS should be mounted in tandem on main deck as on Hopper.

The hull recuires some work but the rest is minor, i am impressed.

So do i,.....................problem is that i havent had a hobby room for over twenty years, i have builded but didnt finished any models, so i have a lot of projects laying in wait. Now that kids are out and cars are fixed and i have moved to a new location, i finally have a hobby room, soooo lets seeee........

Hey, guys, what happens when you totally screw up a piece and cannot repair it? You fabricate a new one! Let me tell you, it has taken me almost a year to figure out how to get around a screwed up kit piece. Now I have!!!

I had a hard time figuring out how to do this, but simplicity took over.

All you need to do is glue a bunch of square stock together (the same kind you use to make the Phalanx chairs), let it dry, and carefully start sanding!

What you will find is that the piece is not only perfect but is awesome. Now all the requisite hatches and stuff can be added to the piece.

I would like to not screw up the piece in the first place, but this is a good way to replicate what you need.
