Admiral Graf Spee 1/350 - colours

Post by Happy.cz »

Hi, I would ask what kind of paint you use on the hull and camo. Glossy, matte or satin? I will be doing Graff Spee from Decembre 1939. Can you help me to Humbrol paint should I use? And the filters? Thank you for your suggestions

If you want accurate colors, here is what you will need in our Colourcoats enamels:

KM 01 Hellgrau 50--superstructure base color;
KM 02 Dunkelgrau 51--hull base color, and lighter pattern color on the superstructure;
KM 06 Dunkelgrau 2--steel decks, and darker pattern color on the superstructure and turrets;
KM 05 Schiffsbodenfarbe III Grau 1--boot-topping;
KM 04 Schiffsbodenfarbe III Rot 5--underwater hull;
C 01 Teak--wood decks.

We have no minimum order requirement for paints, and we ship worldwide.

I am afraid that that information is not entirely correct, as the Operations Manager of the Graf Spee Salvage project when we salvaged the main 10.5 mts main rangefinder it still had quite large surfaces of the original paint and camouflage colors, they were measured with an spectrometer and none of the 3 colors found matched any of the known Kriegsmarine colours, this was probably because they have changed the appearance of the ship so many times to disguise their real identity that we could think that the colours were mixed onboard with the available paints. However if you want to depict the Graf Spee when she left Germany in August 1939, the above suggested colors appear to be correct, in particularly the hull very light gray and of course the Rot 5.
Unfortunately the samples and readings are in South America and I am in the USA for a few months. If yo build your model as after the battle...mmm...you'll have to guess.
I hope this information is useful to yo.

And was any provision made for UV "bleaching"? Oil-based paints darken and yellow when removed from light--as would have been the case with the sunken ship. Also, what light source was used and was any provision made for metamerism? I have been trained in historic paint analysis & color matching, and it is more complex than merely using a spectrophotometer for analysis.
