Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

I checked the book too Chuck and there is no resemblance whatsover to the style of lamp molded on the ensign staff that comes with Tamiya's kit. however Tamiya's piece does look alot like a formation light array..

That is nice. I will admit I've always been a touch surprised and disappointed when I see a gorgeous, highly detailed Yamato build and then they use the poorly detailed planes straight from the box.

I was wondering what everyone's opinion was on the ARII 1/250 Yamato. I would like to have a large Yamato for static display, and understand that Nichimo and Doyusha also make a large kit, but reviews are hard to find. I tried a search of this site, but the results were mostly regarding Nichimo.

Any opinions on the new Lion Roar detail set for the 1/350 Tamiya kit? It looks impressive, with the resin AA turrets and such, but is it a large improvement?

Here is some previous discussion of the set. It still doesn't address all of the issues needed to get a completely accurate Yamato, but is an improvement over the first Lionroar set.

If you don't already have the first set, this is a must, but you may want to consider buying the WEM and Eduard set to complement it, assuming you can afford.

What parts from the WEM and Eduard set are important? As usual, it's a question of gain vs cost. And even if I like the Yamato, my prime interest is mainly to get a decent representation. To many other kits that needs building, but at the same time it would be nice to fix the most obvious faults, if possible.
What about the KA Model wooden deck? If I remember correctly, there's a couple of joints in the deck, where the seams might be a bit nasty to hide. Would the wooden deck help?

There are various pieces that will be useful in both. All three sets seem to complement each other by providing parts that the other two do not. In general, I found the WEM set to be the best sculpted and detailed, and you would most likely want to use their railing in preference to LR. The Eduard contains additional deck plating and other parts not found in the other two, such as custom railings for catwalks and other specialty locations, allowing you to avoid matching bits and pieces to those areas. Even with any of these sets, there are a number of molding errors and omissions (e.g., the gun trainer restraints) which you may want to consider correcting, depending on how much time you want to spend on it. A good reference guide would be essential. Oh, and ignore the painting instructions on the box - Yamato did not have yellow wood decks by 4/45. They were either painted a dark gray or faded naturally to that color, and there were white header markings painted on the deck edges.

What are the large box-like devices just above deck level on the front of the main superstructure? They look like some type of ventilators. They are missing on the Arii kit, but are on the main island piece on the Nichimo kit. I'll need to make some, and am open to ideas or any references.

They are indeed ventilators. The grill faces backwards towards the stern. Here's a good set of pics of the 1/10 Yamato museum picture for reference:

Thanks Doug, and I did find the parts in the kit, so I'll just use those. I'm looking at the hull now, and I want to drill out the ventilation holes which I think is the top row of circles running just above the degausing cable. Then aft of there are the five larger circles sunken into the top of the hull, are they for ventillation also? All the instructions are in Japanese, so I can't read any of the pages of text instructions. Do you know where I could get a translation?

I tried the link, and found the Arii 1/250 kit, but they didin't have the instructions like they did for the one on your link. I'll call FreeTime tommorrow and see what they might know. I can probably get by without reading all the text, but there sure is a lot of it! And thanks, Timmy! R.

The five larger round holes in the hull that you're looking at were actually a series of bladed fans that helped exhaust the plane and boat hangars when they worked on engines there. The openings should be square, not round, and then have a circle within it representing the guard edge of the fan. If you want to be creative, you would then scratch-build the actual blades of the fans inside that. The new Lionroar 1/350 set has the correct shape included, but no one else so far.
