Calling all H.M.S. Victory (1778) fans

You changed the kit stern galleries. How did you do that? That was the one weak part I found in the kit when I had it. It had sink holes. I wrote Heller and they sent me another, but it had sink holes too.

Hi Les,
I havested the nessesary pieces from a spare stern, then used heat to soften them enough to form the radius, along with some misc styrene i think i came up with a reasonable Georgian scheme to represent her in 1765. Along with the stern theres been many mods, cutting of decks,relocating channels, gunports, gratings etc...the progress you see is 1 year into the build.

Sweet looking mod on the Heller kit...Very nice job on the hull to make it look like wood.. I ever get done with Cutty Sark I will start again on my 1803 great rebuild Victory.. cheers Bill C

Its been a long time since I started this thread! I gave my Victory model away. I came to the conclusion that with all the projects that I have going, I would never finish it, or any other the other large tall ship kits that I have. Instead I bought a 1/100 fully built model from a model ship company. Also got a large U.S.S. Constitution also. I will have to post some pics of them.

I haven't quit modeling at all. I have a closet load of stuff to build. I just have a rule right now. "If I won't live long enough to finish it, then I don't start it."

I've finally started constructing the figurehead, and modifying the bowsprit, an area i had been prograstinating on far to long trying figure out what to use, and how to go about it, the medium i settled on is Sculpy, and basically built each seperate. I want to take the time to thank everyone for their kind compliments....cheers.

Thank you gentlemen.... yes the figurehead is scratch built, I believe Victory had this figurehead up to her refit in 1800-1803 when it was changed out to the current one. Cheers.

I just picked up another of these 1/100 Heller kits. I figure what the hell, If it takes 30 years to finish, then so be it. As for accuracy, I recall reading some where that the Heller model is in fact correct for the 1805 period of the Victory in that the Heller model doesn't have the Entry Point Canopies port and starboard on the Middle Gun Deck, and the real ship didn't have them in 1805 either, and that they were added afterword. Is this correct, or do I need to scratch build them into the kit?

I remember reading something about that, but don't remember the date. You might check out the HMS Victory website (I'm sure they must have one). Also, before you get involved working on the masts, you might consider doing the top pieces and tip of the bowsprit in wood. The plastic is kind of thin there and you may have some trouble with it bending when you start rigging.

There are a lot of debate about whether Victory had entry ports in 1805. I don't think there is conclusive evidence one way or the other. I think the main evidence for no entry port is from Turner's painting. There is also speculation that Nelson and Hardy would never allow the loss of a gun on each boardside just for the ceremonial entry port. But neither sounds very conclusive.

So judging from a purely tactical analysis, can we conclude that the entry ports were removed during the 1803 refit on Nelson and Hardy's orders and replaced with extra 24 pound gun ports?
